Title: GE 70ton Diesel?
Post by: #94 on March 06, 2026, 02:37:00 PM
Hello people.

I have had good luck with ebay and want an HO scale GE 70ton Diesel for my Pere Marquette in Allegan Michigan. Which box color should I avoid and which box or phase have people had good luck with? I am asking about the gear issues, not debate or discuss, just which I might have good luck with.

Thank you.
P.S. I know that older 70 ton had two motors. The black boxes are Spectrum which I believe are single motor and may have gear issues from what I have read. Does this make the blue boxes be the most recent run? Have people had good luck with these?

P.S. Again. People are using the 44ton and 70ton chassis and drives for retrofit MDC Roundhouse Diesel and Climax. Yet there still is the question rather the most recent run of these is the most reliable. Does not help to acquire a donor drive if it is relegated to the scrap line.

Re-phrase, does everyone have good luck with the HO Scale GE 70ton Diesel? I believe there are three generations. Currently the replacement trucks in Bachmann 'Parts' state they are third generation.

Thank you.

I have three of the DCC Onboard 70 ton locomotives and am pleased with them. My frustration is that there is no CV list for the decoders and Bachmann seems to not want to share that information.

Is there a CV listing for the DCC Onboard for the GE 70 ton locomotives?

A lot of the Bachmann non-sound decoders use the NMRA/Lenz decoder functions, but there's no good direct translation from German to English (words jumble up). I was however able to get a basic CV listing on the bachmann site & what with having around 13 of these GE 70 Tonners over the years as they came out with the first DCC - No sound units, the numbers all seem to match.

The link to the PDF file for CV listing (Bachmann) is here: https://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/NEM-1LenzDecoderCVTable.pdf

The Standard NMRA CV standard listing is here: https://docs.tcsdcc.com/wiki/NMRA_Standard_CV%27s

Hope this helps.

Although not available in blue for the Pere Marquette I may just randomly purchase a 70 ton in whatever color undecorated. I can get lettering and stripes in yellow with or without red outlining. I can not remember if the  70 ton Diesels they had were ever repainted when Chesapeake and Ohio purchased the P.M.
