I really like these geared engines and was lucky enough to get a great deal on two of Shays' I purchased these two for later use.
Any preventitive measures I should take before packing these away in storage?
If you are storing them in their original boxes, then the only added precaution would be to store them in a dry location.
When you take them out of storage, you may need to relubricate them before use, particular if they are in storage for more than a couple of year.
PN,
I try and store all my engines in a horizontal position,(like they are sitting on a track), to keep the lubricants from running along the sides of the engines. They will reek havick on the finish.
It is a shame to put up those fantastic units!

these are spare units, I am running another Shay and a Heisler on my layout serving a coal mine. The reason for buying these was in case production ceased as in the case of the Climaxes.
