Title: elevation
Post by: pamardon on December 07, 2008, 11:59:48 PM
Hi guys
Thanks for all the help !!

I'm planing my first railroad :)
im debating myself between 2x4 or a 3x7
I want to include some elements such as a tunnel and a over pass or climb a heel
I'm planing to use flex track. how can i calculate the slope? to make the elevation? without making it too steep that the train wont be able to climb!
also how can i calculate to I avoid flexing the rail to much creating a too sharp turn?
what kind of material do I need to make this homemade style LOL

the slope or gradient is simply the height of the climb divided by the length of the climb, multiplied by 100 to get a %. you want to stick to it being less than 4% thats a 1 inch climb per 2 foot you go along.
stick to about a 12" minimum radius and you should be fine with the flexi track. You might have to go bigger if you plan to use very large locos like the 2-8-8-2 Challenger or the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.
Oh, and good luck with the railway.
