This topic probably has been discussed many times. However, I am new on this site and want to get my modeling project right.
The Bachmann HO 2-10-2 is a great model with which I am well pleased. I am getting ready to modify it to follow a Canadian Pacific prototype. I need to remove the rear sand dome, steam dome, and smokestack. I hope to reuse the steam dome, but not the other parts.
Advice, please, on how to separate these parts from the boiler with least risk of marring the boiler casting.

Note on the diagram, the domes are aligned by small pins. Look inside the boiler and you should see the pins protruding. Alternately push on the pins with a blunt instrument, while also trying to wiggle the dome. If the domes are glued at all, it's usually just a "spot-glue". There is always the risk of breaking off the pins if you get too rough with them.
Most details are added in this manner, and usually can be removed, the key word is "gently".
Best way to view the details is by downloading the pdf file, then zoom in to 400% or greater and pan the image with the hand tool.

If you are trying to model a CPR 2-10-2 then moving the domes is the least of your problems. You'll need to get rid of the odd ball Southern valve gear.
Too bad the undec comes with Southern gear instead of something more common.
