Title: Nuts & Bolts & Screws...where do you get your first assortment?
Post by: OkieRick on March 11, 2009, 10:28:24 PM
I used to save every piece of hardware that wasn't going to the landfill when working in tv repair ('68-'73 Zenith & RCA) and utilities sales & service.  Same when working on my automobiles - no nut or bolt went to the trash.  That was back then.

Where do you get your hobby sized hardware - like those needed for HO trains, switch assemblies, etc.  I still have all my dead electronics robbed but I need some screws, small self tapping screws, machined screws with nuts, fiber washers, etc.  I've mnaged to save a few so far but not what I need.  Anyone know were a starter set / assortment can be purchased aside from ebay?

Thanks-
Rick

I buy all my fasteners from the "Fastenal" company. Depending on size, some machine screws cost as little as 80 cents per 100 quantity.

They have many regional outlets, perhaps there is one near you.

For anything electrical I recommend this source.

For precision and miniature tools, this source has it all.

Be advised that most model trains are produced outside the USA and have metric hardware. You may have to improvise if you take something apart and loose the fastener/s. I have 00-90, 0-80- 1-70 and 2-56 drill and tap sets to modify.

I also bought a kit of small hardware containers for my hardware storage. Individual containers in an aluminum box. Stores easily in my portable tool case, Plano fishing tackle box. Very handy when I go to the local mrr club. I have all my tools with me.

Again, your mileage may vary.

;DGREETINGS!! ;)You might also try going to a local "junk store" (Goodwill, Salvation Army', etc.) and visit their toy section.  :o
You might also find some electronic gizmo that makes a sound that you would like on your layout!! ::)
