Hmmmm... At about 1:22, That's the "Oh Crap" Moment.
Holy cow! That looks like something from a movie!
RichG sent me the link. I don't know if it was "staged" or what, but it's pretty awesome.
I would have had to shovel out my dawers after seeing that tank car headed my way.
Good job, thank RichG.

I just received the following related news link from Rich:
http://www.pantagraph.com/news/article_5c29b200-ea08-5c84-922c-e62fb2bb6d28.html
No information about the on board camera, perhaps this is a standard procedure. Luckily no one was injured and we get to see a remarkable view of a pile up.
Did you notice the tank car bouncing and sparks underneath? I watched the video about 20 times.
No one saw that tank car coming. That was the trailing unit.
Whoa, Boone and McHenry? That's right by Union, or better known as the Illinois Railway Musuem!
Scary, that tanker really scares you, looks like something out of a movie...

EDIT: Bob, that's UP's track, right? That sucks. Those things are huge, imagine it looked like a toy when the huge tanker bounced around before striking the locomotive!
What impressed me was how well the loco took the hits.
Bob, Those the on board camera are becoming standard procedure on most class 1s. It is mainly for crossing accidence's. A picture is better than "He said, She said"
I received the video from a friend, so it seems to be making the rounds. I was going to share it with you all, but Bob beat me to it. None the less, it is a great video and well worth watching.

Holy cow that was nuts. I would have to agree with the soveling my dawers out. Good thing is no one was hurt.
I was impressed also, the tanker seemed to appear out of nowhere then whammo. Bounced off like a fly hitting an elephant. :D

According to the news link above one of the tankers was filled with "shock fluid."
Maybe that's why it bounced around so much. :o

A couple of things bother me about this. Why is the camera pointed toward the rear of the consist rather than a "Dashcam" to record grade crossings etc.? When the car rolled it would appear that they lost the "air" and the brakes should set and stop or at least slow the remaining cars.
Just wondering.

To Santa Fe Buff : Harvard is eleven miles north of Marengo on route 23/14 . Union is about 3miles east of Marengo down the tracks UP former CNW. The Tracks through Harvard are UP former CNW Northwest Route . Harvard is currently the last Metra stop on that route , it also goes through Woodstock and Crystal Lake on its way into Chicago.
The route is triple track going through Harvard . John II.
the camera pointed toward the rear because the unit is running backward. The cameras are mounted in the cab and aren't moved from unit to unit. Yes when the cars rolled, they lost the air. But remember you don't stop a train on a dime. That tank car had 20 or 30 cars pushing it. It is much harder to drag 7 or 8 cars on their side, than it is for 30 cars to push one derailed tank car. That is the reason the locomotives stop so quick. The rest of the train was slowing down, but did not have time to stop.
I too wondered about the camera. But if the railroad has one camera in every locomotive, then two locomotives coupled back to back would have two cameras, one pointed forward, the other pointed back.
You probably know that a 100 car train traveling at 60 miles per hour takes almost a mile to stop even with full emergency braking. But what about if the train cars were not coupled together? Wouldn't they still take a mile to stop? I suspect the tank car had already slowed considerably.
In a head on collision at Hinton Alberta (a few hundred miles north of Calgary) a loaded grain hopper flew end over end over three locomotive and split open, dumping its load on the fourth and the car following.
