Title: 2-6-6-2 Fault
Post by: ChrisM on August 31, 2009, 06:51:49 AM
Hi Have just purchased a 2-6-6-2 and have noticed that it will only travel about 250 feet or so and then it suffers from inter-mintent running e.g.
stops for 10 to 20 seconds then starts again , runs , then stops.
Am running Spectrum Controller/Transformer (16V)
Apart from that it is a fantastic Locomotive.
Any ideas as to the stop/start problem.
Thank You
Chris.

Hi Chris, The small controller you are using is only good for starter set use. It will do fine on a low draw engine, such as 10 wheeler. As you know the 2-6-6-2 has 2 motors and is much heavier to move. If you are trying to use the bachmann track , the curves are too short for the larger 1:20.3 engines. It may not de-rail but it will surly bind and in doing so will draw more amps. Next time you try it, listen for a click as the controller shuts down. This is due to over-load. You might as well bite the bullit and get a real controller and some proper track.Save the bachmann track for x-mas tree use.

Chris,
By Spectrum controller I take it to mean you are attempting to use Bachmann's Item #44281 Spectrum Power Pack.  Their catalog lists this unit as being rated at 0.9 amp capacity.

Take Phil's advice and get a "real" power supply.  There are any number of power supplies available rated at 10 amps or more.  That's what you need for the larger locomotives.
