what cross over and track would enable me to make the smallest circle 8 possible can't come up with good one that works in small area

Dear 1346dar,

Define your "small area".

2.2 x curve radius = approx. table width for a Figure 8.

5.2 x curve radius = approx. table length for a Figure 8.

The term for the X shaped track piece is "crossing". 

A "crossover" has 2 identical turnouts with thier divergent routes attached to each other.

What track system are you planning to use?  Atlas seems to have a better selection, at least in non-roadbed style track.
