Title: Bachmann track
Post by: garyklein on October 26, 2009, 10:36:55 AM
I am curious as to what material the track rails are formed from, and if they are steel, what is the plating used to protect them?

Are they suitable for use out doors?

Thank you,

Gary Klein

I'm not sure what the plating is exactly (maybe tin) but they are hollow steel and will rust out if left outdoors in the weather.

The track is not meant to be used outdoors. It is track for indoor layouts and should be left inside. If you want to use track suitable for outdoors, use Aristo-Craft or LGB. I have heard countless people say not to use Bachmann track outdoors. If you can weather-proof it then you could use it. Sorry if I ruined your fun, but it'll save you from destroying track. Thanks for asking, you will find many answers soon. Good luck!

I had a friend that didn't read the instructions and put his track outside. His wife ask me what I used to clean my track with to get the rust off......... He now uses AC Stainless.

It would be great if Bachmann started selling outdoor track.

There are already many manufacturers of track -
Aristo
USAT
Piko
LGB
Accucraft/AMS
Train-Li
Llagas Creek
Sunset Valley
Peco
etc.

I think they are wise to not stretch themselves into a new product line given the state of the global economy.
