Title: Trolly
Post by: glsummers on December 27, 2009, 10:47:44 AM
I am building an N Scale coffee table layout and want to have a DCC N scale trolley. Does Bachman or anyone else make one that will run on DCC?

Long answer            It  may be possible to fit an aftermarket Decoder into the B'mann Trolly. I'm not sure what it looks like inside (or outside) but with decoders getting smaller and smaller, it is most likely possible you will be able to convert one simply, or with a little modification to the chassis.

What decoder would you all recommend trying to put in an N scale trolly?

My question is....Why would you want to?

Unless you have a reverse loop (and want an automatic reversing module), there is likely no benefit of adding a DCC decoder to a trolley. If I were you, I'd stick with DC.

Hi glsummers,

I do not own any of the B'mann trolleys (Brill or PCC); therefore I cannot comment on whether or not they are DCC ready from the factory.
If they are not, then you will need to isolate the motor.

I am a DC guy, but two fellows at the club have installed Digitrax DZ123 Z Scale decoders (both in N Scale Brills) and both are satisfied with the results.

From what I understand, the decoder is pretty basic (but so is the Brill) and can be had for <20 USD.
Again, I am NOT a DCC convert and cannot speak as to what the definition of "basic decoder" is by today's standards.

Good Luck

Glsummers,

Welcome to N scale Traction!  Eventually I will be using DCC with my N scale streetcars (and the plan is on live overhead catenary too).  Though I don't have any cataloged DCC Trolleys to tell you right now.  If you continue to be involved, this may be of interest:

A reasonably active group with some very knowledgeable folks:

Some good resource material:

If for instance you modify a Bachmann Brill streetcar for DCC you will need to isolate the motor as done here for a different purpose in an article by Alex Postpischil:

All the best and hope to see you at nscaletraction!
