Where can I find HO flat beds, boxs and other rolling stock in Desert camo. Also looking for frieght like tanks, trucks, canons and so forth.
:DGREETINGS!! E-BAY would be a good place to start, and put your "wanted" on "craigslist.com". :o Also, any train shows, flea markets, yard sales, etc. You may have to do some weathering, but that shouldn't be difficult. ;D I went to a train show near Atlanta, Ga. one time, and they were almost GIVING some army cars away. They were "MASH" cars, but they were nice!

There is not alot of desert painted equipment out there. I know Herpa Models carries a few hummers and assorted trucks in the desert paint scheme. Remember, desert camo is really a uniform item. Equipment is usually painted in a very light tan, or dark green--even in desert situations (been there done that). There's enough dust in the desert to disguise the equipment.
There is a plethora of WWII HO equipment out there (some with desert paint jobs). Just do a search of the Walthers website. I counted nearly 1000 items. Modern equipment, you pretty much have to paint yourself.
Perhaps someone knows of another source.

Was hoping to find stuff at a show early December but the show was very disappointing not worth the two hour drive. Tan on the equip is the Desert camo, been their too. Retired so I don't get to play again. didn't hin about craigslist but have check e-bay. Was looking for a retailer I could order from, I don't have a lot of time and want to finish my lay out before I am unbale to work on it.
Not much Desert camouflage....but it is military.

In actuality, the Army does not operate their own fleet of trains. I lived near Fort Ord for 30 years. The 7th Infantry Division made at least two rail movements a year. They used standard Trailer Train equipment--60-ft flats, 85 ft piggybacks and bi-level auto racks. On occasion SP would provide one of the Bi-Centennial cabooses for the MP escort, otherwise ordinary bay window cabooses as needed. Most trains had an assortment of grungy Geeps.
Department of Defense operates a small fleet of heavy-duty flat cars with DODX markings. These were dark green 60 ft flats like the TTX cars but had 6-wheel Buckeye trucks. These were the "Tank Cars" that would be left at Salinas for the Santa Margarita Local to take to either Fort Hunter Liggett or Camp Roberts.
Some bases that have sufficient need had their own switchers. We have a former Navy ALCo MRS-3 here on the YW. I recall a 44-ton Whitcom center-cab at Moffet Field. Vandenberg AFB had an ALCo. gj
Not looking for a real life application, looking for coolness for my nine (9) year old. Making exact recreatons of yards and towns can be fun but making kids smile is a blast. And while you will never see a Army spur next to a stock yard spur , with a coal depot at the end. when my is done you will see a happy seven year old girl playing with the farm animals, and a nine year old son moving around tanks and trucks.

OK--got your idea. Those ones we called "Tank Cars"--because that's wqhat they were carrying--usually spent overnight right across the tracks from the Amtrak station in Salinas (and our club building in the old REA building.) gj

:DNow, THAT's what it's all about!! :o If my layout ever gets finished, it probably won't be very "real-life-ey" ::), but it WILL be FUN!! ;) I plan to have a lot of sounds, action, switching, smoking (buildings AND locos), and anything else my disturbed mind can think of in the name of FUN!! 8)
