Title: Decoder for older HO Dash 8-40C
Post by: carebbean on January 06, 2010, 06:30:05 PM
Hi Everyone!

I have  2 Bachmann HO Dash 8-40C (#9183 & #9217).  I am having a hard time installing an HO sound decoder and speaker. Are there specific decoders that should be used in the very tight space! maybe an N scale decoder?

Any help is appreciated.

Happy New Year and Blessings!

If you go with an N scale decoder be sure to get your multimeter out and take some measurements, to ensure your decoder can handle your locos. The problem with speakers is that the larger speakers have better sound, but often times there is not room for a large speaker so the lower (bass) sounds are not that good when you use a small speaker.

Gotcha! Great advice.

When manufacturers have decoders designated for particular locos, is that because they have the sound properties unique to that loco?

In other words, if I'm not a "diesel purist", I could get any smaller decoder that can handle the current draw of the loco?

Thanks again.....
