This loco is not DCC ready and does not have an 8-pin socket and would require soldering, but the motor is isolated.

If you'll do a search on dcc thomas, you'll find a number of articles dealing with installing decoders in a Bachmann Thomas.  Apparently the engine is what I would call DCC friendly--motor isolated but no plug.  There are also several sites where you can buy a Thomas with an after-market decoder installed.  Buying the engine/decoder seems to add about 35 bucks to the cost, so it can't be too hard a project.  Good luck.

My guess is that Bachmann figures that the Thomas line sells to parents of little children who probably couldn't care less if they are DCC equipted
