That's really interesting. It is the first time I've seen the new restoration facility too. Last time I was there was before the roof collapse in 2003. There was an old building there which I see is almost torn down and that grassy area was a small yard. The old timers called the area "Russia" supposedly because it was so far away from the roundhouse.

The Mason looks real good in its movie star green paint and that's a fine fat tank engine. Too bad they put closed window coaches behind the steamer but I guess that's what they have there and there may be insurance liability issues. It's nice to see the ex-Pennsy MARC coaches though. I see you have 130+ videos - lots more to check out :D

Wow! To see a 155-year-old locomotive operating under its own power!

That tank engine is kinda cute, too.  :D

Quick question, does anyone know the status of any of the Ohio Central steamers?

They are being taken to, I think somewhere around Sugarcreek, Ohio. Jerry Jacobson, the former owner of Ohio Central (before he sold to that crap company G&W) was allowed to keep all the steamers, 22 diesels and like 20 passenger cars. He is building a 15 stall roundhouse with a massive turntable. Including back shop and what not. It is called the Age of Steam Roundhouse. So far the turntable has been installed but I'm not sure if it actually works, since the roundhouse is so big it is nowhere near being done yet.

http://www.ageofsteamroundhouse.com/index.html

There is all kind of info on it. It also says that he will not be running passenger trains as he owns no railroad lines. He will, however, rent out his steamers and passenger cars to tourist railroads/excursion train operators for use. He will also operate various freight trains across the rails of neighboring railroads.

It's a darn shame that the OC steam program folded up.  I think it mostly had to do with escalating insurance costs.  I think they have at least 4 operable locomotives - a GTW 4-8-4, a CP 4-6-2, a CN 4-6-0 and an LS&I 2-8-0.

Ebtnut: I agree with you. But the Age of Steam Roundhouse is better than the fate of most the steamers in the 50s and 60s, the scrap yard. And also NKP 763, 765's sister is under ownership of Jerry and is going to be restored at the roundhouse.

I can't wait until it's open!

Good to hear that they are alive & well. I hope CVSR rents them next year again. Its not like one of those 5-10 minute Thomas events *don't take me wrong because i do enjoy that too* but this was 1 hour back, then forth. A museum might just do a 20 minute ride, like the B&O *again, i loved that too* Either way, I'm just pleased to hear that they're OK!

Me too, Jettrainfan! The last few years the Byesville Scenic Ry near Cambridge, OH has rented 1293 but in 2009 they couldn't because of (I think) logistical problems and so far this year on the BSRW schedule on the website there has been no mention of either a Coal Miner's Festival or Steam Weekend (they are normally on the same weekend). I would really like them to get a steamer again because the only way for it to get to Byesville is via tracks that I see all the time running along I-70 and it would be really cool to chase.

Here's another survivor that I'd really like to see saved in a way that she could be run again.  I think she's in pretty good shape, having been stored indoors for many years in the Pittsburgh area.  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=316963&nseq=0

I'm pretty sure the steam locomotives are all part of Jerry Jacobson's personal collection. When G&W bought the OC the steamers were unaffected- they just needed a new home.
As for the 2-10-4, despite being in beautiful condition both inside and out, it has its faults, notably its inability to make it through guardrail-less frogs.

Hey, GG:  Re: the 2-10-4, is that because she has a blind center driver?  A friend of mine used to be a member at the Illinois Railway Museum.  They have a Frisco Russian Decapod, and he said when they first got it fired up, they headed out into yard.  The loco went through a turnout and the cab crew thought they had derailed.  Turned out the switch had a self-guarding frog, and the extra-wide blind driver just really bounced over the frog guards.  I can see that same issue with the B&LE engine, really limiting where it could go in off-main areas.

Yes, the BLE 2-10-4s had a blind middle drivers to negotiate sharper curves.

I seem to recall about that IRM decapod, That it was originally built for wide gauge, 5' I think, and thats why it had problems going over self guarding frogs. The tires were wider to fit the wheel.

They have a Russian decapod at Spencer Shops - Seaboard Air Line #544. It was built to 5' gauge and it has extra wide tires to run on U.S. rails.

BTW, when I visited there in the early 90's I told them I was an NRHS member and rail fan from Washington DC, and they gave me and my friend a cab ride in their Southern FP-7 #6133 ;D

Great videos :D That was quite an assembly of steam. From the funnel stack Leviathan, through the Flagg Coal 0-4-0T, the magnificent Little River 110 4-6-2 and "big steam" Nickle Plate 765. Couple of interesting box cars there. I note the 0-4-0T is kind of "frisky" and can accelerate in a burst, almost like a hop.

What is the story on the "Leviathan"? It sure seems to duplicate the Central Pacific "Jupiter" from Promontory, before they discovered the actual paint scheme for the "Jupiter."  ???
