I have an old 0-4-0 Porter from the Lumberjack set in the 1991 catalog. The gear on the axle that drives the wheels is slipping, and I can't get the grease out from under the gear to CA it. I did this before, but unless all the grease is out from under it, it will not work. It ran about 4 feet before slipping aqain. Can I take off a wheel, or should I send it to Bachmann for fixing?

I have several old porters the axle on all of mine is a two piece assembly which has a square spline that keeps them insync and there is also a larger square section of axle that keeps the gear from spinning. These type will pull apart but be careful it is easy to break the inner spline if you don't pull them apart straight away from each other. Bachmann still had these available as a complete motor and wheel assembly when I called two months ago they were around $50 I think for the whole assembly.

I have replacement axle gear mounted on an axle and cross drilled and pinned.

I also have a metal version of the cluster gear, but am waiting for the shipment from my casting house.
