Title: Projects yard.
Post by: BaltoOhioRRfan on July 30, 2010, 09:21:41 AM
Here's whats currently in my projects yard awating repairs/etc

Track 3(fartherst away from camera)
C&O 2-8-2 Mikado(formally a C&O 4-6-2). Justs needs some final testings
Circus Coach - Just some minor detailing left. Its pretty much done
Southern Pacific Coach - Not sure what I'm gonna do with this yet, might turn it into a Ma & Pa Coach

Track 2(middle)
B&O Shay #6 - Oddly enough just needs an overcoat to seal the decals. I had stripped the tender and coal bunker because of so much paint was taking the rivit detail away(was never happy with the lettering). Did that work about 8 or 9 months ago.
50T Climax - Probably going to be spruced up for a display piece, missing too many parts to repair fully.
4-6-0 - Once I get a tender for it(i have one somewhere) going to become C&O #5 for Excursion service painted up in O.T. Lettering like the one in the B&O Museum.

Track 1(Closest)
B&O 4-4-0 #625 "Washington" - To have tender chain's repaired then painted as B&O # 12 "Purdy" for my 2nd fallen dogs Memorial Train. Purdy passed away back on July 10th from natural causes. Back in January i had to have her daughter put to sleep due to a brain tumor. Lost 2 of my 3 dogs in less then 6 months.

Coach - To become a casket car for Purdy's Memorial train. Her train will have same concept as SArah's only it will be painted pullman green with gold stripes and will be all enclosed. Will probably do lighting once i learn how to do it.

B&O 4-4-0 675 - I believe this loco derailed on me last time i ran it causing damage to the pilot and tender chains. This loco will be fully repaired and put back into service.

I have more but those are the main ones for now. Track 3 will probably be open for more projects once i finish up the Mike and Circus coach along with the Shay so i can move the SP coach to track 2.

What you guys got you're working on? and Comments on my projects greatly welcomed!

BORRF,

As always, you have some interesting projects.  You obviously have a talent for making the little details look good.  I would enjoy seeing your trains run.

One of these days, you need to get a piece of plywood and build yourself a small layout.  It would be rewarding to see your treasures run through some scenery.  I can only imagine what a great job you would do making the scenes look real.

Hmmm, for myself, I'm always working on a bit of scenery and planning my next loco project.  Right now I'm trying to complete all the main elements of a coal mine.  Just finishing up some yard lights and ground foam.  Will post some pics when I get through.  I'm trying to complete all the basic elements of my layout before I focus on the little details:  era correct vehicles, figures, little bits of junk everywhere, weathering, signage, etc...  The stuff that keeps you busy for years.

I'm at a crossroads concerning locomotive projects.  I have come to the realization, that no matter how hard I try, I won't get a homemade loco that runs, or looks, like something from the factory.  Been saving my pennies for a brass project, but I'm also considering getting something ready made instead.  So many choices... Bachmann has made it harder to choose.  There's the new 4-4-0 modern in B&O markings that's calling me from a distance.  The Proto Heritage 0-6-0 looks delightful.  And of course, I still want the Spectrum 0-6-0T for my mine.  The budget will only allow one choice at a time.

And I may see something at the upcoming trains shows that I cannot live without.  I need to start rolling dice or flipping coins. :)

Regards,

Jonathan

Aren't they neat?

I believe there is also a Cal Scale product, made of brass.  They are in the Walthers Catalog in the superdetailing section. And I see them on ebay all the time, for $2.80 each.  I actually ordered a few through my LHS.  Still waiting for them.

Balto.

1.  Where do you get your ideas for paint schemes?

2.  How do you do it, i.e. paint brush, air, spray, etc?  If you could share a brief step by step, I would greatly appreciate it.

I ask because this 4-4-0, and a few others you have shared, look like fairly professional finishes.  Again, quite a talent...

Thanks a million.

Jonathan

Hand painted with paint brush. The Blue Richmond and this green one were inspired by the Presidential Pacifics. and I heard one 4-4-0 was painted in the green livery like the Pacifics called the Director General.

Pipefitter,

Glad to help.  Hope to run into you one of these days in Chantilly or Timonium.

Looking forward to getting MY heralds to top off some of my B&O treasures.

BORRF,

I am impressed.  Hope you don't mind, I grabbed the 4-4-0 pic and tried to zoom in.  Got too pixilated (is that a word?) to get a good look.  If I could brush paint a loco with no visible strokes, that would solve my reluctance to take on another loco project.  Spray bombs are iffy at best (66% success rate so far) and I am not spending big bucks on an air brush system.

So, do you use special brushes, enamels, acrylics, floquil, testors, tamiyra?  Please let us in on it.

Regards,

Jonathan

I use soft brushes made for acrylic paints, and for the most part i use Polly Scale paints mostly though I have some Model Flex for B&O Gold.

yep, should be easier to paint now that I got the shell off, instructions say remove just couplers and pull, i ended up reming couplers, trucks and 6 screws.

4-4-0 nearing completetion for now. I only have the letters P U  D and Y for the name of the locomotive PURDY. the R decals(accully a whole new sheet) is on its way. Gonna do the tender striping and adding a stripe to the cab, also adding the number on the steam dome.

45 Tonner should be completely decaled today

Update on the Memorial train, GE45 Tonner completed and a surprise project i did a week or two ago

Sarah and Purdy's Locos together, Purdy's needs a smaller number to match Sarah's and still needs her name applied. Both will be done next weekend when I should have the decals to finish it. Also Missing from Purdy's is the marker lights which i have in a safe location so i do not loose them while working on the engine. A picture will also be applied once i get more blank decal paper. my local supplier is out of stock right now.

Very nice work.

Just out of curiosity... Is there a prototype for the 45-tonner?  It's not important.  I've decorated a few things in ways that never existed.  Will do it again.  Just wondering...

Yeah I think they look better that way for thier purpose as a Memorial Locomotive. I just got the green ones decals today to add Purdy's name to the engine and will add it tomorrow morning along with the correct size number. I will also replace the capital dome so its straighter and then add the marker lights. Then all that's missing is Purdys picture on the front which will come as soon as i can get more decal paper.

Josh, Those are gorgeous locos - well done! Are they the Richmond modern 4-4-0? I have some projects going on but they do not have a nice yard as yours. They are scattered around my workbench, but I'll try to get some pictures. Two years retired I am finally settling down to work on my trains :D

I kept mine as a coal burner because a) I wanted it that way, and b) I was afraid to mess with the tender to change the fuel load for fear of breaking something.  :D

You do beautiful work.  :)

Thanks. I have several Richmonds, These are the only two with wood loads.  I have at least 5 Others, 3 in B&O and 2 in Maryland & Pennsylvania. All coal.

Switching to Wood isn't very hard at all, just pop out the coal(you may break off one or two of the plastic poles that secure it in place)  and then just sit the wood load in the tender. DO NOT GLUE IT if you plan on putting the tender back into the box for transport. IT will not fit.

I hope you don't mind some more questions :) I see your locos have a nice gloss finish. What kind of paint do you use? And do you use an over coat such as gloss coat?

I have begun to use Testors paints because they are gloss and are great for decaling. However, they tend to be bright, "primary" colors. I have three old Mantua tank engines that I would like to paint in a dark blue, dark green and wine red paint, but don't know how to pick colors for mixing. I found out for example, that you don't make dark blue by adding black to light blue ::)

The colors I want are available in the Floquil line, but they are very flat. So one would have to spray the flat. Then coat(s) of Gloss Coat. Then decals. Then coat of Dull Coat if you don't want too shiny a surface. I use a 50/50 mix of Gloss/Dull coats on my Testors painted cars and they look very nice. However I painted a car with Floquil flat Pullman Green, and then gave it three coats of Gloss Coat to get it ready for decaling, and it was still pretty much dead flat, but details like rivets were disappearing in the thick coats. So I abandoned it and stripped the paint.

Sorry, this post has got so long. I should probably start a new thread

Best Regards,

Robert

Its fine, just gives my projects more publicity.  haha :-D

Anyway I use Polly scale waterbased paints along with B&O Gold from Model Flex
I use MicroGloss over the paint for decaling. Then useally I would reovercoat with Microflat but since these are Memorial engines i use Microgloss. Everything is brushed on.
