Title: the Flying Kipper
Post by: RBMN #425 Fan on August 17, 2010, 10:15:53 PM
i was thinking when i  was looking through the T&F train sets, how about making a 'flying kipper' set? it would be henry, 5 ventlated vans, a brakevan, oval of trak  controler, and possibaly cranky.
how would that be? ??? ??? ???

Sorry to burst your bubble, but wouldn't fish need INSULATED vans instead of ventilated vans?

no sometimes in the television series fish are even put in trucks! but there mostly in vent vans

i think cranky kinda puts it over the price limit  ;)

Sure HiT puts fish in open wagons.. Doesn't mean it's proper railway practice. :P

Why? He's not expensive from my memory (take note that I got him ages ago).

he costs $33 directly from the bachmann website

and i added up the cost of every thing and i got a total of...
$241
(without the controller but including the oval of track and Cranky) for this set :-\
and im sure they would add more so they could actually make money for themselves, not just being spent on making the stuff :(

That's not terrible considering this would be the biggest set made. About 6 trucks, an engine, and a piece of scenery with an oval: Not bad for ~ $250.

Yes, along with James' Freight set, the 6 ton wagon, RF container wagon, and the red express coaches.

I find it funny that you were talking about the person that you are talking to and you still used "he."

Anyways, besides terrible humor, JD417 says 241 with everything and you say 261 with NO Cranky... That doesn't add up at all.

Technically you're all wrong, you need to add a little more, since Bachmann has to design a special box for each set. :P Thus the fee goes up

but uh, yeah. That's way too big of a set.

yeah but in a set the items are actually less than seperate sale.
give or take $5-$10

Train sets, especially some Bachmann ones, are usually 2/3rds the price of all of the items included.

Most model manufacturers do so.

I'll put up an example to show it would be somewhat what StanierJack said:

You have the regular old Thomas with Annie and Clarabel HO Set (not sure if it is retired or not now). <------ $110 Retail

In said set you have:

Oval of E-Z <----------- Specific Retail Price Unknown
HO Thomas <----------- $45 Retail
HO Annie <--------------$16 Retail
HO Clarabel <-----------$16 Retail
Bachmann Speed Controller <-------------- Specific Retail Price Unknown

Alright, 45 added to 16 added to 16 is none other than 77... Okay 110 to 77, about a $30 difference. I think an oval of track and a controller is worth more than that for retail...

My point:

The price of this set would be less than if you were to add up the retail prices of each individual product. Now 5 vans (even if it is Henry) is a bit much for a set, so maybe 3 vans and a brake van. You really don't even need Cranky for this set. He could be replaced by a regular Sodor dockyard crane. That drops the price a bit, and taking that into consideration:

"Flying Kipper Set, expensive a decent deal"

maybe for this set, they should add Henry's 2 lamp's on. hope that could work. now, i was thinking of a set with Henry in it called " Henry's forest run" with Henry, two flatbed's of log's and a brakevan. sorry to pop this topic.

in the episode from series one he also had a cct wagon (repainted mail van) and a truck with a canopy over it so my thoughts:henry old shape with 2 lamps a brown vent van a grey vent van a tt1 with canopy all exclusive to this set  and (not exclusive to the set) a breakvan oval of EZ-snap track and controller (now this is a set I'd buy just for the henry and trucks I'd sell the track and controller via ebay) ;D

it could use some more trucks, like the truck i came up with in "the everything thomas thread".
