Title: SD 45 TB II Horn and Bell to Low ??
Post by: Reading Fan on December 14, 2010, 09:23:34 AM
Hello, Im new to Williams trains and O scale in general . Have always be molding HO scale.  I picked up a Williams SD 45 w/ the TB II sound unit at the Greenburg show this past weekend.  When I got home and tried the unit she runs fine forward and reverse. The horn and bell work but they start out low and go softer as the sound board is on ............Is this normal ??  I'm running this on MTH Realtrax with the 100 watt Z transformer
Ohh and not matter how high or low I set the throttle is stays the same.   It is so low that when the trains is moving the clack of the wheels on the track drowned it out...........Would this be a service issue ??   Thanks for any help you can offer..........

There is a volume switch inside the engine, but you must remove the outer shell first, then you look for a volume switch that resembles an older style T.V. volume switch that is missing its extension knob. About half way is the normal setting, to adjust while running you may need to prop the engine on something and attach jumper wires to the wheels or frame.

The older Williams before Bachmann have a decent adjustment, not sure about the newer T.B. 2 by Bachmann.

I have three Williams SD-45's made before the True Blast 2 sound system and they run very good. I run two SD-45's together with a Shark B unit with the T.B. 2 diesel sound unit in it, have hooked all three units together with two wire quick disconnects from 1/32 scale remote control model cars.

Thanks Lee, I will pull the shell off and take a look.  Now for the strange part . I tried the horn and bell last night again and now they both are loud.  Maybe a loose wire to the speaker ??

Sometimes in shipping the miniture plug-ins come loose. So try pushing the miniture two wire plug-ins into their sockets all the way. I doubt that a wire came loose, but you may want to check that as well.
