I am new to DCC - Can I take the Birney trolley out of the box and run it on DC?
Yes, but it will run better on DCC than it will on DC, but it will still run pretty good, it will just require more power to start moving because of the extra current draw from the DCC decoder. Unless you are planning on running 3 or more locos simultaneously there is no need to upgrade to DCC.
