Title: Dear Bachmann: Duck the Great Western Engine - Improved!
Post by: The Chaz Storm on January 07, 2011, 10:43:10 PM
Hello all!  As soon as this thread will be posted I will delete the older Duck and Trevor thread.  This is the letter I have mailed to Bachmann, notice the changes and/or improvements I have made to this.  A lot more professional, and was aimed for the marketing in the Bachmann industries.  I am doing this for redemption over the other thread, and simply for the sake of more recognition for what loyal Bachmann Thomas and Friends modelers want in their collection.

Here we go:

Dear Bachmann Trains:

I am aware that Bachmann will be announcing new products for the Thomas and Friends range in February 2011 during the Toy Fair.  The following is a message that I posted on the "Ask the Bach-man forum" regarding a character named Duck the Great Western Engine.  This is an engine that many Thomas and Friends modelers, myself included, would love to see released next year for Bachmann's HO Thomas and Friends line.  I had emailed this message to someone at Bachmann back in February 2010, shortly after Bachmann had announced their 2010 range of announcements, and I was told that Duck was "on the product radar" for next year in 2011.  A model of Duck has been wanted for years by many fans, and as explained in this letter, we sincerely hope that we can see Duck make it onto next year's Thomas and Friends range.  With the fact that production of Donald and Douglas models has been delayed until 2011, I find this to be a perfect time to add Duck into the Thomas and Friends HO range.

Duck first arriving to work on Sir Topham Hatt's Railway in 'Duck Takes Charge'
I have been a modeler of HO scale as well as a member of the 'Ask the Bach-man' board for many years.  I own a decent number of Hornby Thomas models, but I prefer Bachmann for their superior accuracy to the television series of Thomas and Friends.  As I particularly collect classic series characters only, I own a significant number of Thomas and Friends Bachmann models.  I just recently purchased the Bill and Ben models, and I plan on ordering the Donald and Douglas models upon their release next year.  If Bachmann announces other classic characters like Duck, then I would certainly add that to my collection, as I am sure many other fans would do.
I first joined the forum and started discussing Bachmann Thomas and Friends almost six years ago.  A lot has changed over the years, however some have remained the same.  As you may know, around that time, Gordon and Henry were in production.  The top three engines who people wanted to see were:
1. Edward
2. Toby
3. Duck
Before Bachmann made announcements for the 2010 Toy Fair, we wanted to see:
1. Duck
2. Donald and Douglas
3. Diesel
I am VERY happy with the fact we are getting four classic characters this year from Bachmann!  I applaud Bachmann for announcing these characters!  Four engines in one year is the most we have ever gotten in one shot!  Older fans like me are very excited about this, however this leads me to my main point...what about Duck?
In terms of the TV series, Duck made countless appearances in the early years of the show, appearing in classic stories such as All At Sea, Twin Trouble, Donald's Duck, and many more!  Along with that, Duck has had many other starring roles and appearances in the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends DVDs and VHS tapes, titles includePercy's Ghostly Trick and other stories, James and the Red Balloon and other stories, and Thomas Comes to Breakfast and other stories.
Duck has been wanted by many fans for YEARS!  I remember meeting the Bach-man in person at a model train show years ago, and he told me which engines he personally wanted to see produced, and Duck was one of them!  Of course, it's not solely up to the Bach-man to make that decision, but I am sure he would love to see Bachmann come out with Duck, along with many of my fellow Thomas fans.  I, along with many of these people, have grown bored with the Hornby model.  We are still waiting anxiously for a Bachmann Duck ...and with your help, hopefully we can change that! g

Here is our favorite Great Western Engine in the episode 'Duck Takes Charge'.
Here are the reasons why Bachmann should make Duck for their HO Thomas and Friends range.
Duck is a popular character with both the older and the newer fans of Thomas.  Like Donald and Douglas, Duck was introduced to the television show in its heyday in the mid 1980's, and like any classic series character, fans would undoubtedly be happy with this sort of addition to Bachmann's growing range.  Newer Thomas and Friends characters may sell well in the range, but the older characters of the show are in higher demand and will have a better chance of selling more than the newer ones, as older fans of the show are a significant demographic to which these products are sold.  Evidence of this can be seen in many places, including on the 'Ask the Bach-man' forum, other Thomas and Friends forums, and YouTube.  Duck in particular has been on top of many of our wishlists.  The older generation of fans is the one who usually purchase Bachmann Thomas and Friends items for both HO and Large scale, and this should be taken into account when considering new releases.
Duck returning to the sheds after a hard day's work from the episode 'Diesel's Devious Deed'.
Now profitable reasons for why Duck should be made (Bachmann please read this and consider it):
1. As Donald and Douglas are already set to be released, keep in mind that Duck also uses a 0-6-0 chassis, and would therefore not require a new one to be produced.
2. Even though Hornby was the first to make Thomas characters such as Edward, Toby, Bill and Ben, Bachmann was still able to manufacture superior models that sold successfully.  I feel Bachmann will continue their success with their own Duck model.
3. You have already made Sodor engines 1 (Thomas), 2 (Edward), 3 (Henry), 4 (Gordon), 5 (James), 6 (Percy), 7 (Toby), and currently working on 9 and 10 (Donald and Douglas).  So why not add Duck, who happens to be Sodor engine #8?
I highly recommend that you make Duck for 2011 for your HO Thomas and Friends range.  You will not let us Thomas and Friends fans, old and new alike, down if we see Duck next year.  It is a great opportunity for Bachmann to save money with tooling, so why not start where you are with Donald and Douglas, and make plans for Duck next year!
One last side note regarding the possibility of Duck being added into the HO Thomas and Friends range.  If you choose to produce a model of this character, I have some a few face suggestions that would look wonderful on the model:

 or

or even
(http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100504105342/ttte/images/2/20/ScaredyEngines32.png)
These faces are the best looking ones on Duck the Great Western Engine, and they will satisfy Thomas and Friends modelers a whole lot more than a CGI face.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.  I look forward to hearing back from you, and I am always looking forward to hearing news about new products.  Take care and have a wonderful day!

Those (in my opinion) are great reasons why they should model Duck.
1) I think if any this face had the best chance. (the photo from "Duck Takes Charge")
2) But this is my favorite choice. ("photo from "Bowled Out")
Side Note:
Bowled Out is my favorite episode.  ;D

Really!?!  I'm not criticizing HiT but they really should see this product would sell really well so why not give Bachmann the approval?  ::)

Hey, great job on the letter!  I sure hope Bachmann takes it into account.  I am also a big fan of Duck and I really hope he is announced for release.  Thanks for speaking up for the fans!

Actually....try 6. :P  I was on the board back in 2005 as I stated in the letter, and I know for a fact Duck was on top three with Edward and Toby back then.

Really?  You'd think Bachmann would've released an engine that's been in demand for that long by now.  Well, they've released every single other classic main character.  Duck's the only one left (besides possibly Oliver).  If they don't announce Duck by at least 2012, I doubt they ever will...  :'(  Let's hope he's announced this year.

It's the logical thing to release it but if they don't (which I hope they do) they better wow us with the other characters they announce.

Personally I believe HiT and BACHMANN are playing a clever game because I remember also in 2005 everyone wanted Duck and I actually called BACHMANN and asked in 2006 now I realize that was five years ago. Now Duck is back in the show (For Season 12 at least) that way even the little ones know him now and not just us because letfacade it we are the minority of the Thomas community. All that plus the fact he has been in demand this long, if and when he is released he will sell unbelievably.

See I was thinking like that too. I think that the newest viewers won't know him thus thinking of him as a new character.

I still hope Bachmann would listen to the fans in terms of what we want in terms of both the great western engines.  So if not 2011, then hopefully 2012.  If not 2012 then I'll start to have doubts on them coming out.  Which will definitely annoy me because I don't want to feel that all my effort for Duck was wasted.

I'll still close my account, but not just for that reason alone.  It's more depth then that.

But taken from the Oliver thread, a petition for both great western engines would be a really good idea, considering how they are high in demand at the very moment.

Yes indeed. If Duck were made and he was put in a set, what do you think it should include? I'd say the red branchline coaches.

Most likely he wouldn't come in a set for awhile but, if anything yes he would probably be with the red branchline coaches.

yes you can. i do it all the time. you order in British currency, then they take out the same amount in American money. ex: just recently i ordered new points for my layout. the total came to 23.45, in British money, so the bank will take out about $37.44. if that makes sense. :-\
it's really easy.

As would I, but HiT has seemed to have something against Duck from the word Go if you ask me, I mean look at the facts, he was a MAIN character from season 2 to 6, which is really from 1986 to 2002 so quite a space of time and in that time he along with the other Engines maintained their popularity and Ducks models were selling, like his ERTL model, Wooden model, TOMY model, HORNBY model as well as others, he was #8 Part of the Steam Team (I hate that phrase) then HiT takes over, no lines for him in season 7, and then absent for four seasons. He was replaced by Emily completely, probably to appease a group calling Thomas sexist she even moved into Tidmouth Sheds (I Would love to hear what the group thinks about that ;) ), but why introduce MANY more male characters after just to leave them after one episode when you already have great old ones, just to make money off their merchandise, seems silly to me because those characters are in so few episodes kids don't recognize them and their models don't even sell. Think about it if a little kid didn't see Heave Ho Thomas they have never seen Hank same goes with Flora and others, it just doesn't make sense. You have old characters fans would love to see and new fans would like as well and then you would have sales.

But to conclude this I really hope Duck is released, if not now soon, If BACHMANN made a post season 7 character Like Rosie whom I loathe, or others I would get them merely for the sake of collecting but they would probably collect dust in a siding. I am hoping for classics first, and I assume you all would agree.

100% right. They make all these characters to SELL them. You know, the first time I saw Flora, I was at the toy store. I had no idea who she was, but the little kid in me (and all of us) made me want it. Oh, and I now think flora is definitely possible. She is just like toby. I would get her, but she would just collect dust in the corner. (like you said) I agree with you.

Probably. Hey, look at this way. Maybe Bachmann and HiT could make a compromise. HiT could get the model they want (Rosie or some other girl), and Bachmann could get the model they want (Duck). It's genius! (almost) :D

I think Bachmann is with HIT on this one. HIT tells them the best model, they make it. They know HIT knows what their talking about.

But since when has HiT known what they were talking about, hahaha jk, If they have been choosing the models so far they have done a good job.

Something tells me we may see Diesel before or around the same time as Duck.  Seems like the perfect canidate, to some extent a better addition with Duck then Oliver would be, but that's just my opinion.

Shes a girl, so she has a chance. And plus, she would sell, I think(I know they would sell me...)?

If that's the case then Daisy and Lady have a high chance. :P  I don't think gender plays any role in Bachmann products.  And how some users have even said making Flora wouldn't exactly be a great idea on Bachmann's part.  Neither would the other season 12 characters or even someone like Billy who appeared once and only once.

I think Rosie is the most likely character to be made by Bachmann. Personally, I wouldn't mind either, since it'd be the first Ready-To-Run USA dock tank in British form. Obviously it'd be a bit toy like.. :P

I think Rosie has a pretty high chance too, even if I'm not a fan of her.  The top three I see coming out in no particular order are Duck, Rosie, and Diesel.  Maybe even a slight chance of Oliver, Stanley, Whiff, and Arry and Bert, but I think the first three I mentioned have plenty of potential to be made.

Look at it this way, if you really dispise Rosie, but like Puffa from tugs, you can model her into him. You will have to adjust the funnel a bit, but it will be easy.

well you got to addmit that Oliver was Hornby's Best engine, they even gave him a traction tire! i mean there duck was fine but needed a lot of work, which i have provided, but i know with the bachman one i wont need to provide NEARLY as much work ;) , if Bachman does release oliver i dont think i would buy it right away because i actually like Hornby's, BUT believe me i WILL get anything bachmann makes sooner or later ;D

Not a fan of Whiff. He is just odd.

A while ago on eBay I saw an LGB engine with a similar look to Duck! Only it was a 0-6-2 instead of an 0-6-0, but the back wheel is hidden. It would be easy to slap a face on it, if you are good at those things, add some green paint, and put on the number and finishing touches and boom. You have Duck. It won't be 100% accurate, like Bachmann's would be.......... ;), but it will hold you over.

For Whiff's chassis, I'd suggest using Emily's chassis and wheels by turning it around so that the wheel config is 2-2-4 instead of 4-2-2

@ThomasFan247 ive already thought of that but rember Whiff doesnt have any side rods, even if i take them off then i still have a screw hole going in a circle, so i was thinking about using a hornby emily, it might as well be used for somthing seeing how it looks nothing like it's tv counterpart

Excuse my asking but what does any of this Whiff-talk have to do with Duck? This thread is supposed to be about him, after all.

just saying.

I found that the current Bachmann Junior loco (the one that resembles a J94) has a cab and bunker shape that is very similar to Duck's in the TV series.. Do you think one might use that to make themselves a 'Bachmann' Duck? I could see that happening.

EDIT: Whoops. I was looking at a pic of a modified bachmann junior and not the actual thing. :S Still tho, the cab could be edited to appear like Duck's...

Ducks drive wheels are a further distance from each others than the Bachmann Junior. The Juniors drive wheel space is closer to Thomas' (not sure if exact though).

hmm, no i got somthing, u know how we kept saying that D&D and Duck could use the same chassie? well for one thing we got an open cab and a cloased cab and the face levels are different meaning the eye mechanisms would have to be @ different hights, so, sadly it wont be as easy to make duck as we thought

Donald and Douglas' chassis being reused as Ducks isn't a problem. Changing the x and y position  of the eye mechanism shouldn't be too hard of a design change, and cabs aren't really part of the chassis...

I know I was steering away from there and I was looking at another factor of why duck should be made I know cabs are not part of the chassie I'm not stupid... or am I? ??? :-X :-\ :o

when i was talking about the cabs i meant the back wheel on D&D is right under the cab which will hopefull be open, and for me (Duck) all the openess he gets its the window meaning there would be just a blank spot in the chassie for me (Duck)
so maybe bachmann will use that as an oppertunity to add more weight  :)

He's referring to if Duck was made if Donald/Douglas's chassis/mechanism would work, since their are a lot of differences in heights and such  ;)

Toad would be very easy. They already have a tooling for his class of brake van, and in his case there's no reason not to just stick a face on that.

they make new toolings because they are scratch built to fit in to the 00/HO scale. i remember some one posting something like that a long time ago. plus, if they did use the models they already had, they would have to modify them A LOT! they would be too detailed for the Thomas range.
