Title: I Need Some Opinions on my Layout Plans
Post by: TheJJ on January 08, 2011, 09:34:22 AM
Now for my layout....its just starting. :-\ 1st) I plan on buying Tidmouth sheds. I don't know if I should I buy 2 expansion packs or enough to fit all my trains in (that would be 8 packs) thus making 12 all together. My idea so far is to get 2 to make 7 sheds for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Emily. Then buy separate mini sheds (that hold only 1 to 3).
2nd) Should I focus on buying more engines or more rolling stock?
Your opinions would gladly be taken into consideration.

From my experiences with model trains, I suggest getting all of the track, sheds, and other must have things first. Then buy more engines are rollingstock. And after that start buying trees, stations, houses, etc.
Hope it helps,

Ok that does help. I have plenty of track and not one shed so I will get Tidmouth and put off the engines and rolling stock until later. Thanks ;D
But now I do have another question I got some money from my uncle (late Christmas card) and I know I will have enough money for another engine (and Tidmouth). Should I get Bill, Ben, or Spencer?

Which of the three do you like the best? Would you be getting both Bill and Ben or just one of them. If you get just one, I like the Bill and Ben over Spencer. I would save up until I had enough to buy both at the same time.

That is probably the best thing to do...yeah I think I'll wait. Thanks again for your opinions.

Another quick question. I have equal amounts of track types should I go with the kind that comes in Thomas sets (with black roadbed) or the other with grey roadbed?

In TTTE the roadbed is normally grey, so if you would like it as accurate as possible, go with grey.

Sorry for the double post (Sparks I have learned not to double post though) but after those questions they bring me back to my first question should I have 7 stalls in Tidmouth or have 12 stalls? 12 will fit all my engines but 7 would be TV accurate.

Six or seven stalls is good. Thomas, Percy, and Toby have their sheds at Ffarquhar, Edward, Bill, Ben and BoCo presumably have sheds on the branch lines, and then there's the Vicarstown Sheds as well as the mainline engines shed at Tidmouth (Sheds).

Season 8+ though, I'd say go for 7 stalls since 12 stalls can take up a lot of space.  :)

Ok but I thought before Toby came to Sodor he had his own shed and in the episode when Toby finds the old mine and castle he had his own shed (sorry I forgot the name) he also had his own shed in Tram Trouble.

i would go with 12, because Donald and Douglas have made many appreancences in the sheds, same with duck and Oliver(if they are made), so basically, i would go with 12.

I will consider both options. But right now I'm thinking of the 7 and I will buy a non-Thomas (regular) shed I saw at my local hobby shop it holds three engines so that will be enough for D&D and another engine.

In the Railway Series, all three engines share a shed at the end of Thomas' branch line, and Daisy stays in the carriage shed with Annie, Clarabel and Henrietta. It was still like this in Thomas and Victoria. The TV series abandoned this idea after Season 2 sadly. It was a very good idea and gave the mainline engines more room. :)

Up to you at this point though.

First decide what KIND of track you wish to have. I reccomend Atlas true track but make sure you plan out what it is going to look like BEFORE you start buying track.
Hope this helps.

Well before I asked an opinion on which engine to purchase so that brings me to a new question. Since I have enough money for Bill and Ben or Spencer should I purchase the Bill and Ben, wait for D&D, or wait for the 2011 announcements?
Title: Re: I Need Some Opinions on my Layout Plans
Post by: jettrainfan on January 09, 2011, 08:05:21 PM
this is just me but I'd go for the old stuff before the new, but that's anthern where they make a model for 1-2 years. So I'd say Bill & Ben and you could save up again to buy D&D, the next lot, ETC when they come out  :)
Title: Re: I Need Some Opinions on my Layout Plans
Post by: TheJJ on January 09, 2011, 08:09:00 PM
Well when you put it like that Bill and Ben sound like the best choice...so most likely I'll do that (wait).
Title: Re: I Need Some Opinions on my Layout Plans
Post by: TheJJ on January 10, 2011, 08:07:31 PM
Ok I had a great idea (my opinion)!!! I know many modelers want to make the skarloey engines well I know how.
Now this isn't accurate but I still think its great. I'm gonna get a "Gandy Dancer" and cut out the inside of a take-along model until its a shell and simply adjust to fit perfectly. Now it may take A LONG TIME to get my parents to order one but it will be worth it. I'm know it WON't be perfect but it should still give the general idea of a narrow gauge engine. Please list your thoughts.

That's a good idea, its not accurate but I think some people take the model railroading hobby too seriously. It will work fine with rusty. Happy kitbashing!

sounds like a good idea, but i'm not gonna do it because i'm not a fan of the narrow gauge railway

so far no one asked the obvious, but how much room do you have?
You really want to design the layout before running out and buying a bunch of stuff that might not fit. (And think it may not look right if you have a great shed setup on a small layout with no place to go.)

Also, assuming you have lots of room, consider working with cork roadbed and flex track. It looks better, is more satisfying, more cost effective, plus you have greater flexability not being stuck with the selection of curves/lengths available with snap track.

I'm gonna get either 2 4x8's or 4 4x4's.

2 4x8s is easier. i have 2 4x8s and i'm planning on getting a 4x4 for my tidmouth area

Well if you look back in the thread you will see I was going to try a project with a gandy dancer, well I got it today but have decided not to do it. Instead I also got some model paints and have decided to make myself as a tank engine. It is going to be a white, black, red, or silver engine I haven't decided yet. I'm asking what color you would like to see this turn out to be.

u can use sharpie but i highly, HIGHLY DONT recommend it, paint always looks nicer, yes it will take longer to dry and whatnot, but it will be worth it, imagine if i used a black sharpie on my diesel (YES I GOT A NEW ONE HORRAY!) one glare and it would look purple :P so, ya wait for the paint ;)
