More track! Plenty of curved and a fair bit of straight track. Left & Right turn-outs will also come in handy :) Here's my layout at the moment, but I'll be ordering some more turn-outs to make more places for my rolling stock to go. As you can see, it's a little congested :P

I've held back on the detail for now, because waiting till I get my own place before I set up a table then start buying all the grass stuff etc.

Track first, then engines, only if you don't have any, then scenery, then once scenery is complete add to your roster.

one suggestion:

i notice on fighter4luv's layout he has alot of 18" radius s curves. you might be able to get away with those with the smaller thomas cars and locomotives, but your standard freight and passenger cars are going to give trouble on those curves. better to put a straight section between curves of opposite directions......

I'd suggest the following site for decent layouts in small spaces. You could certainly convert one to be Thomas-like.

http://www.carendt.com/index.html

I'm working from it, simply because the site is brilliant!
