Title: Edward's smokin'!
Post by: therailwayinspector on September 11, 2011, 05:44:19 AM
Eyyoikes!
I was running Edward today when I smelt a burning sort of smell from within. Taken him apart, can't see anything wrong, ran the chasis and some smoke came out from within!
I will check it out properly later, but nayone have any suggestions to what it may be and how to deal with it?

Sounds like the motor is burnt out. Perhaps look at the spares section on the site here, although it might be cheaper to get a new model outside of the USA/Canada.

Opened him as much as I could (couldn't get the actual chasis block apart) and could see nothing. Put him back together and he works fine.... how odd.... Still, at least I won't have to replace him yet, which I am grateful for.

Unfortunately,  this is the kind of thing that happens to lower budget models. Send the loco into Bachmann along with $15.00,  and they will replace it. I should warn you. It takes some time for them to return it to you.

Even longer given I'm in the UK.... He seems to be behaving himself again, but I shall certainly be watching him like a hawk...

I had this problem awhile ago and I had to send my old edward model in. I still have the tender for keepsake. It's true what they say, you never forget your first Subar- :-X-I mean Bachmann Edward!

Haha I read this thread expecting to read that someone had added a smoke unit to Edward.  Funny how the mind jumps to conclusions.  Glad he is behaving again for you.  At least you know you can send him back for a replacement at anytime.  Bachmann sent me a replacement for my broken GS4 it took about 2-3 weeks.

Here is the story: I sent in my Edward. About two weeks later, There was a package at my door, I opened it, and to my surprise, THEY SPELLED MY NAME WRONG! ::) But more than that, enclosed in the small package, was Thomas!!!!!  :o So I called BACHMANN and they were sorry and said they would send Edward right away and that I could keep Thomas as a Christmas present!  (This took place the day after Christmas, and a good thing to because my old Thomas was worn out after 5-6 years of service.) About two and a half weeks later, there was another package at my door, and Edward, slow but steady, had reached my Minnesota home!!     :)

So instead of repairing the old model, they just replace it with a new one? I was wondering because I plan to send in my Edward and Henry for repairs.

If the parts are still manufactured, then they will repair it.  If the model parts have been changed to a newer style and not available then "The Bachmann" will send you a new replacement. If it's easier for them to just replace the engine then they always have that option.  My GS4 SP Daylight broke, it was the older style so for $40 they sent me a DCC onboard model.

For me, they always send a new engine. Examples: Thomas, Percy, James, Edward. Most of them were just their motor burnt out. But they never repair it. Just send a new one.

I guess with the Thomas line (plastic drive gears and inexpensive engines that wear out) it is better business practice to send a new one to keep the customer happy. Again, that is always "The Bachmann's" call. Even though the cheaper bachmann models don't really last, at least they have a spectacular lifetime warranty.  If I get a "cheap model from the competition and it's engine goes up in smoke chances are I will have to replace it myself.

Thanks for the info. I also wanted to send in my Annie coach because I accidently chipped two corners of her roof off. However, since she is a piece of rolling stock, I'm not sure what would be required to have her repaired (e.g. a repair fee of some sort). Has anyone ever sent in rolling stock for repairs? If so, what did you have to do?

That I don't know.  I looked online to see if they sell replacement parts but I only see listings for engines not rolling stock.  That may not be covered under warranty.  I suggest you call The Bach-mann and see what he says.  Chances are you can buy a replacement roof for her for just a few dollars.

Funny story about smoke... I was running a bachmann GE70-ton at the model railroad club i go to and the little guy blew out a traction motor! *NOT LITERATELY, IT JUST SMOKED* Picked up the engine, took it off the layout and set it in the yard and it worked fine, no more smoke, i was starting to panic... traffic was being tied up from a local i had passed up... luckily the driver broke the rules and held up a passenger, so i had time to reset it on the tracks and high ball it into a siding, where i was gonna drop off 6 covered hoppers along with the loco to Danville Grain. Its funny how smoke works with bachmann engines. I've ran my little guy a couple more times after it and its just fine... but track got dirty once more so its in the sheds till i bring it back out when track conditions are better.

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do. Thanks for your input.

You know its wierd, I got my Edward at the World's Greatest Hobby on tour when it was here in Cleveland about three-four years ago. It ran very well but then it started jerking and just stopped all together. I sent him inwhen I hot him back, he went bad again last year sometime and I sent him back again. But the second time I got him back quicker so Im wondering if they just replaced him. But, anyways he's fine now.

My Edward started to slow down last year. This time last year he stoped working for a week then cooperated for a month. I replaced him this year around april and works fine.

My Edward didn't smoke, but for some reason he started going slower than usual. At first he would eventually snap out of it and go his regular speed, but one day he stopped working altogether. I also noticed that when Edward and another engine are put on the same track, neither of them will run, so I assume he has a short-circuit of some kind.

Well I guess all models just vary when it come down to it.
