Title: Truck question on the 3 truck Shay
Post by: Lost Lumber RR on July 10, 2007, 01:17:45 PM
I just got a new 3 truck Shay.  The truck on the tender does not pivot.  Is it supposed to?  If it is, how can I correct it?

Thanks

The drawings and digitalmentation show it pivoting, but they discovered in testing the prototype model it doesn't work like the "real thing".

The coupler is truck-mounted, the drawbar is body mounted.
Try backing a long-ish train, and the term most closely applicable is "jack-knife".

If you were to body mount the coupler, you might be able to get away with the truck pivoting.
But I wouldn't.
Easier to get the thing on the track if you only have to align the water bunker.

Takes 5-10 minutes to make it free-pivoting, but the conversion is permanent if you want the factory locks.
