Title: Battery power for Climax
Post by: tsbikes on May 24, 2012, 12:57:46 AM
I have a Pardee & Curtin Climax with Phoenix sound installed. I would like to wire it so it can be battery powered (with a trailing car) or switched back to track power. Is there a wiring diagram available. I would appreciate any other informtion.

Thanks,
Jim Grimes

Which version of the Climax do you have?

Older non DCC or the current DCC ready?

By battery power, do you mean R/C controlled as well?

If so, will the R/C control system be in the loco or in the trail car?

I think it is the older non DCC model. My plan is to run with a trailing car using Train Engineer and 18volt tool batteries. I have Bachmann Mallet and an Aristo Pacific set up this way.

As far as I know there is not a decent wiring diagram for the older Climax.
What I can tell you is that the motor is connected internally in each truck to the track pick ups which will involve some careful surgery to separate.  Then extra wires must be fed up into the loco.
Also note that the chuff timer does not work.  So if you are planning sound you will have to use voltage sense of speed or fabricate a mechanical method of chuff timing.

Hi Jim:

Here's what George Schreyer has on the Climax.
