Post by: Gene on October 28, 2012, 10:19:52 PM
What are DCC receiver and sound system options for the 45-ton center cab diesel?

Gene-

I suggest that you visit the web sites for DCC manufacturers and see what they recommend. That willl allow you to compare
what's available and choose the decoder that's right for you rather than what I think is right for me. I do have to warn
you that this is a tight-quarters install which you should probably avoid unless you are comfortable working on DCC.

Gene - Being an affectionado of Bachmann's GE-45 Ton locomotive I was also interested in adding sound. I went to the Tony's Train Exchange website and called their establishment. They offer a sound decoder that has dual Cummins diesel engine sounds and can install same in your locomotive. The price is steep @ ~$105 (check with them as I am relying on my 67-year old memory). Tony's website is http://www.tonystrains.com/ (http://www.tonystrains.com/) . I have had another locomotive converted to DCC and was very satisfied with Tony's work.

I decided not to pursue adding sound to my GE because I hadn't planned that large of an expenditure into the 'mix'. I do caution you that you will have a sound-equipped GE-45 Ton locomotive that will be worth much more than any selling price. However if there was ever a well running model that deserved sound - this is it.

You need a decoder and speaker. Go to the below link. The decoder selector is easy to find. Some here should store this link in Favorites. Bachmann uses the SoundTraxx decoders in their on board sound locos.

You will need soldering experience. Some have done this install.

Go join the Yahoo SoundTraxx Group. There are a few photos of a 45 ton with 750 and speaker. Look in the Photos section.

You can pull the weight out of the oil tank and put the speaker there. Use a thin layer of coffee maker filter material between the speaker and speaker grill. The magnet will pick up magnetic particles from the road bed and affect the speaker without the filter material. You will be surprised by the amount of magnetic material in your railroad roadbed. Others have found this out.

If there are any capacitors on the motor, remove them.
