how good does it run?

How good is very subjective. These little ones run best at near full speed. I have one. reversing too fast will cause the motor worm to strip the plastic worm gear.  Not repairable. Many have the motor fail. These are display models.

Yes, if even that often. Bachmann's tiny early trains all suffer from being so light that their rail contact suffers. They are also built very lightly so they are easy to damage. People who bought these models with the intent of running them regularly must be quite disappointed.
