try to find a NWSL wheel quartering jig. if the rods are simply out of quarter this will fix the problem. it is easy to get things out of quarter when the locomotive is disassembled. the drive rods should be offset 90 degrees from the other side.

The older engines have a problem with the wheels coming loose on the Axel shaft or the shaft braking along with stripped gears. Check to find the loose wheel. Thur trial and error some times you can adjust that wheel and align the rods back up. Then add a drop of glue to hold it back in place.
New parts are hard to find.
