Michael-

The numbers on turnouts (and crossovers which are just two or four turnouts bunched together) refer to the proportion of forward distance a train moves compared to the distance it diverges from the straight (through) track. Therefore, smaller numbers mean sharper turns to the turnouts. Number four turnouts can cause trouble for longer rolling stock and locomotives. Most things can negotiate number sixes and number eights will accommodate just about anything other than a huge old brass steamer. Do note that snap switches are not really turnouts as their diverging tracks are curved whereas true turnouts have straight diverging tracks.
