Title: Side dump cars 92502
Post by: mickeykelley on February 09, 2013, 11:21:25 AM
I have 3 of the green side dump cars that have plastic wheels.  First of all, what era are these modeled after?  Second, will the regular bachmann metal wheels work on these?  As I understand the new ones are only brown and do have metal wheels, but are the green ones still available other than eBay?  I would like to have them all match color.

I'm not ceratain, but think the prototype cars were from the early 1900s.

Take a look at Sierra Valley Enterprises detailing kits for these models:

http://www.sierravalleyenterprises.com/bach_ore_cars.html (http://www.sierravalleyenterprises.com/bach_ore_cars.html)

The kits include metal wheelsets along with a choice of couplers and several replacement and added detail parts that really improve both the appearance and operation of the cars.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Which metal wheels from Bachmann are the correct ones for replacing the plastic?

Hi Mickey,

I believe you will need the 24.5 MM metal wheels which are Bachmann Item number 92422.  Before you order measure your plastic wheels to see if the are 24.5mm just to be sure.  My dump cars are in deep storage so I can't be absolutely sure.

When I measure, do I include flange too or just rolling contact area?

Mickey,

Depends on what your trying to do but Gary Watkins (Sierra Valley Enterprises) used to make a fine scale conversion kit for those early (plastic frame) side dumpers.
Just checked his web site and he still has them listed, might want to give them a look.

Good luck

Hi, they are measured on the area that makes contact with the track.

Please note that the tread is tapered and will usually measure 24.5mm at the smallest part and larger near the flange
