My bachmann HO James seems like he is going at a speed of 10 when the controller is set to 100. What should I do?

Are his wheels and the rails clean? Because good electrical conductivity is essential for smooth model train running.

Yes I have checked several times, and all the other trains run very well.

i have the same problem with mine except now it smokes and sparks

That happened with my Edward some time ago, I changed motors with Emily and than it worked - Emily still doesn't work. So I assume the motor is the problem.
