Title: How do i oil the gears in an On30 2-6-0
Post by: kaslokid on March 25, 2013, 04:11:06 PM
Good day
I have an On30  2 6 0 and it it about three years old. I am getting a clicking sound from the wheels only in the forward motion. How do i get at the gears to oil them without getting the wheels - drivers - messed up out of sync. Hope someone can help me please.
Thanks in advance
John

I doubt the clicking sound is coning from lack of oil. Sounds like a linkage rod is loose and only hitting in forward. Tighten all the screws. Also check the plastic sand lines around the wheels to see if they got bent and are rubbing on a wheel. There are also copper wipers used to pick up current that hit the back of the drivers. These also get bent and can hit the spokes of the drivers.
If you remove the bottom cover you can lube the gears just leave all the drive rods on the wheels connected and they will stay in sync. Just lift them up you don't have to remove them all the way.
Run the engine slow and look close and you may see what is clicking.

kas-

I agree with bobwrgt's opinion that the clicking sound doesn't usually
indicate a lubrication problem; however, be sure to clean out the old
grease/oil before adding new if you do decide to lube the loco (or any
loco for that matter).
