Title: UK Trip Thomas Destinations?
Post by: SodorAdventures on May 15, 2013, 04:57:15 PM
Hello everyone,

My family and I are planning to take a trip to London (UK) this summer (July), and I was wondering, are there any GREAT Thomas destinations that I should see. I know Drayton Manor, but are there others (Rev. W Awdry Birthplace, Museum, Movie (in the theaters)?

                                                                Thanks, Tanner

Maybe the National Railway Museum in York, it isn't Thomas-related but there are many great engines, some of them are prototypes of the "Thomas"-engines:
City of Truro
Flying Scotsman
Stephenson's Rocket
Mallard (Spencer)
Stirling Single (Emily)
Aerolite (Whiff)
BR Class 9F (Murdoch)
BR Class 08 (Diesel)
Boxhill (Stepney)
North Staffordshire Railway No. 1 (Stafford)
SR Bulleid Q1 (Neville)
LMS Stanier "Black 5" (Henry)

I hate to burst some of the bubble that NikeWale has inflated for you but;

City of Truro is currently on loan and being run on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.
Flying Scotsman is in bits being heavily repaired and is unlikely to be seen in one piece and back on the main line until 2015.
Mallard is at the NRM but only to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the A4's. It will then return to the NRM sister site at Shildon, Durham.
Single Stirling currently at the Shildon Museum.
BR Class 9F (AKA Evening Star) is at the NRM but only for a short period of time.

Sorry for the bad news.

Sure the evening star has been there for a while, being out of service as I'm sure it is?

City Of Truro is NOT at the GWR as it has been withdrawn from service, as it has been for a month or two now after some serious boiler tube leaks. NRM took the decision as she was due out of ticket soon anyway and the cost to make the repairs, as well as the state of certain parts, was not really viable for such a short space of time. (I might have a fact or two wrong but that's the basic jist of it.)
Presently, Truro IS on display at the NRM before she receives some attention for a presently permanent-looking-future on display.

As for places to visit, if you get the chance DEFINITELY go to the Bluebell Railway! Can easily take the train from London Victoria to East Grinstead where the Bluebell station is just a minute or two down the road!

Otherwise, I can't think of anyway truly Thomas-themed to go off the top of my head....

Hey,

Thanks for the help. Does anyone know whether the Studio at Shepperton studios is still occupied by Thomas? Or has it since been dismantled? I know some things went to drayton, but where did the rest go?

I'm pretty sure EVERYTHING went to Vancouver for reference in building the CGI models and environments

Alright, thanks. One last thing, does anyone know if there are any railways with the driver experience for a 15 year old? Thanks, Tanner

i know the Nat. Railway Museum does a thing for driving an engine. You have to pay X amount of money and you get to drive a steam engine for Y amount of time. There are more details on their website.
