Post by: Penn_senseless on July 21, 2013, 05:45:09 PM
Guys...my internet stinks...havent been able to check out the announcements.

Are my eyes deceiving me, or is Bachman going to do an AFFORDABLE HO scale GG 1?

If so, what roads, and when can we expect em?

It's great to see another GG-1 rendition. I think that an Amtrak version would be preferable to a (yucch!) PC version.

And in CNR and CPR colours for the Canadian market?

Wadda ya mean they never ran in Canada?  That hasn't stopped (insert manufacturer) from painting non Canadian prototypes in CNR and CPR colours before.  :-)

Is the body plastic?

I have been wanting to make the "modified" GG1 variants for some time.    There were two different styles of "High Intakes" ,  and some GG1s had steps cut into their sides.   A plastic body would facilitate this the most readily.

If these look good enough next to a BLI or MTH GG1, I'll be happy.   It does kill me that I just picked up a bunch of the BLI GG1s,   but on the other hand, I did get most of them for less than the  MSRP of these.    Fortunately for Bachmann, there is still space on my roster for them.

Ideally,  I'd like to do #4876,  and one of the bloody-nose GG1s.  Both have the high intake vents, and many of the silver Amtrak GG1s also had the side steps.

i for one am very happy about bachmanns new GG1 announcement
ive been a fan of GG1s for many years, and remember seeing them in operation going thru the sunnyside yard in queens, they were magnificant machines, had many chances to get up close and photo them
however im still hoping for another new announcement for those steam fans who were patiently waiting for bachmann to bring out another steamer, be patient guys i was patient for this new GG1 and in the future bachmann will not dissapoint you
for now let the pennsy and penn central fans enjoy the moment
and again thank you bachmann for chosing the GG1 for production

The body is indeed plastic. We have done extensive research on the locomotive (the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is not very far from our offices!). This combined with our new Sound Value control package should make this one heck of a locomotive. One of my personal favorites!

I think that many GG-1 afficiionados would like to know that GG-1s were often seen to exude smoke like a steam engine. It had something to do with the boilers that were used to heat the passenger cars. I assume there was a safety valve that would release steam. Somewhere I have slides of this phenomenon taken by my godfather who spent a lot of free time photographing trains in the Woodside, Queens yards.

I can't wait to see a Bachmann GG-1 up close and personal!

yes woody you are correct
the GG1 had a steam boiler and was often seen in the winter emitting white steam from the top of the engine,
the old days of wakling in the sunnyside yard are long long gone, do you remember the 43rd street loop where the GG1s rolled by at 5mph, into the mid 70s there were still pennsy and n.y.c passenger cars around being GG1 pulled
up until 1982 the last days of the GG1s in queens ,4877 and 4876 were still in service as well as an assortment for amtrak

Guess we will have to wait till Octoberish since there ship date is not til September, uuunless someone was at the train show and Bachmann had one on display and they could post pics.
I would be interested in one but don't care for the paint scheme's they choose.

Am really curious to see the thing's innards and how the drive train is arranged.

to John T - my godfather's father worked in one of the towers in Sunnyside. He started with the railroad as a, if you can believe this - a telegrapher! So my godfather had a ringside seat as he often was in the tower with his father - not much worry about security back then.

Jerry - you can't expect Bachmann to bring out all the GG-1 paint schemes. My favorite (other than the traditional brunswick green with five cat whiskers) has to be the silver with red stripe. I think the scheme was designed to match a train - the Congressional, if I recall correctly.

The saddest scheme of all (which was no scheme) was black with the ridiculous PC worm applied. How cheap could they get? (answer - pretty cheap!) At least they painted the engines black.

I once went cross country by car with friends. On the way back we passed a railroad yard in Indianapolis. Sitting with a train was an E-8 or something similar. It was painted in PC black. With the afternoon sun hitting it broadside you could see the PRR broad stripe under the awful black paint. That whole PC era was a sad one for railroads and railfans alike.

Sorry Woody,

I should have been more specific. I was answering to stationmaster12's post about the SD's, but i can say the GG-1's are not on the top of my list either.

I agree with woody about pc being depressing. the whole railroad was falling apart before our very eyes. conditions were so bad, standing trains were derailing ii in Conway yard. the rail would roll under them as the ties were so rotten the spikes couldn't hold the rail.

I remember the gg1s well, and I've always loved them. my dad used to take me to Enola, where they changed from electric to diesel. the single stripe with the large keystone was my favourite, as that's the way they were painted when I saw them.

wow woody, many of the old towers in sunnyside are gone, they even built a new harold tower, and now with the new east side acess going on theres major redoing of the loop end of the yard.
as far as you mentioned security penn central was not there, they were very lucky there was never any problems in the yard years back, today its all fenced up all around from hunters point avenue along skillman avenue across 43rd st and down northern boulevard
check my facebook page for GG1 pictures

Woody-

You don't suppose that "PC" stood for "Pretty Cheap," do you?

also hey woody
i saw a few penn central E8s in the late 70s in elizabethport nj yard and the paint was so faded your saw the tuscan and keystones in pennsylvania reappearing
now bachmann
you have a great engine here,, sure there are plenty of paint jobs and variations to do ,,im sure you will not disappoint us

hi quark
perhaps bachmann someday will do the conrail 4800 bicentennial version
it was a bit gaudy, when i saw the engine in 1976 at conrails kearny yard in n.j. ,
it needed to be washed, the only GG1 to have silver painted trucks

GG1 #4800, nicknamed "Rivets", was the original one, only engine that had riveted body. Other 130+ was made with welded body, so the body was smooth, no rivets.

Also, I think that the #4800 was the only GG1 later colored in Conrail blue.

Anyone know how 4935 "blackjack" got its name? Just the color thing and some luck?

GG1, I think one of the stories about No. 4935 is that if you add up its numbers (4+9+3+5) you get a total of 21, the winning score in the card game of that name.

Just what I wanted to see - a Conrail blue GG-1 with a big can opener painted on its side. Is Old Rivets preserved somewhere?

Yes, "Rivets" is still around, in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, in her 1930s-era paint.

Now, all we need is a Conrail 1776 GG-1.  ;D
