Title: Stuttering...
Post by: sodorlad on August 06, 2013, 04:46:48 PM
Just looking for a little advice, from people who know what they are talking about... rather than fans of Thomas!

My Percy and Thomas models have started stuttering/stalling at low speeds. I'm not having this problem with Emily or James.

They are only used occasionally, though they are usually on display (though kept free of dust!)

Is this likely a lubrication or cleanliness issue? Or a motor/controller/power problem?

Welcome   ;D

The first thing I would check is the cleanliness of the track.
But not all of your engines are doing this. Hmmm  ???
Second how clean are Percy and Thomas's wheels?
You can clean them and try again.

Let us know how you make out!

Thanks Smcgill for taking the time out to reply.

Indeed, a little cleaning has done the trick... Quite surprising how much black came off the track and the wheels!

I just used a clean, dry dish cloth... Ongoing, do I need to use anything more sophisticated?

Glad to hear it! ;D
LGB smoke fluid and a clean rag will do wonders!

I use alcohol and q-tips, keeping it away from painted ...anything.

All great ideas, but be sure to use plastic compatible products, or if you do not, then absolutely keep it away from your plastic parts!!!.  When done wipe things down to avoid picking up more dirt.

For what it's worth, are you using a volt meter and a separate
amp meter on your rail road? Someone sheared this with me a
while ago,cut my trouble shooting and maint. in half.

Having these two meters on any layout full time would be useful. Probably cost less than a couple premium coffees.
They will help someone with limited experience, and teach them at the same time too.
