Can some help me out? I'm trying to take the shell of a EMD GP 40 locomotive to make it a dummy and need help?

To my knowledge, you remove the couplers if this is a HO scale.

You probably did not pay attention, there are forums for different scales.

Pry the fuel tank off and you will find 4 screws underneath, remove them and pull the shell straight up.
The only ones I know of Rich that you have to remove the couplers are the SD's unless the older versions of GP's were different.
