Title: On30 Center Cab diesel
Post by: ebtbob on October 08, 2014, 11:12:16 PM
Good Evening all,

I have tried to find a sound file or video of a Whitcomb diesel to listen to the prime mover sound.    There are a couple on YouTube but for me,  not very good.    Is there any way I can hear a sound sample of the sound decoder offered by Bachmann for this engine?

I dont  think  the  sound unit  is  available  yet  for  the  Whitcomb Diesel,  it certainly  isnt  here  in  the  UK  and  new  items generally  arrive  here  boefore  they  do  in  the  USA.

Thanks for your response Steve.   If that is fact that the sound module is not ready yet,  then that makes my decision MUCH easier to go with another sound unit.   Will get either a Cummins diesel or a Baldwin for light switchers.  But,  that being said,  this is one sweet engine.   It runs great and will take the tightest radii I have on my railroad,  that being 18r.

Dear Bob,
The sound units are, in fact, available, and they sound great!
Sorry to make your decision harder!
Come to York!
Best,

Mr. Bach-man,
Will that sound decoder work on my Bachmann G scale 45 ton diesel switcher?  If so, any installation tips?
Thanks,
Chuck

Dear Charon,
No, it won't, because it's not a decoder. It's the sound portion of the existing decoder.
Try a Soundtraxx decoder.
Have fun!

I put up a video on YouTube with a demo of my new Whitcomb. I show off all the sounds. The sound quality is very good.

Dear Mike,
Nice job!
Did you notice that upon start-up first one engine is heard, followed by the other? It's a really cool effect!
Thanks!

Mr. Bach-man,
Will the sound work on a DC layout, or does it have to be DCC?
I am thinking of building a small On30 layout to match my Fn3.
Thanx,
Chuck

Dear Charon,
It will work on analog, but you have less control of individual sounds.
Have fun!

Bach-man,
Thanks for your response.  I thought that was the case with the sound, but wanted to make sure.
Also, I found three Spectrum On30 B&O boxcars still in the boxes in my "you're at your own risk going into it" train closet. Can't remember when or why I bought them, but they should look good behind one of those diesels.
Thanks again,
Chuck

I installed  the  sound  module  in my  Whitcomb today,  it  took about  10 mins  to  do very  easy!

Just a couple  of   points to  note, the  Tsunami  installation  states  that  the  2  airtanks  are  secured by 2  screws in each one, this  is not  correct  the  \Airtanks  are  a  simple  clip fit, once they are  removed  to screws  can be located underneath, also  the side  railings  have to be  unclipped  from the  cab  sides to allow  the  whole body section to  lift off.

I find  the  sound  is  very  acceptable,  I  have no  idea  how  the  real  thing would  sound, but   the  sound  is  like  a  typical  small diesel  loco.

Also  of  note  is  the  fact  that  there  are  FIVE different  airhorn  sounds,  which   are accessed  via  CV 115,

REMEMBER if installing   a sound  module ... reset  the  on board  decoder  FIRST  (Value 8 in  CV8)  It is  worth  doing  this  even if the  factory settings have not  been  altered..

I really  like  this  loco  although  its  a  diesel  I think  it  is  one  of  the Best  From  Bachmann 0n30  so  far

Good Morning all,

I opted to put another manufacture's Baldwin sound module in my center cab.   From what I have heard on YouTube,  the sound I chose is very close to the Bachmann sound.   But,  the sound is only a SMALL part of what makes the a GREAT engine.    It will be the only diesel power on my On30 railroad and I am glad I made the purchase.
Now the next step is to encourage Bachmann to release a small 2-8-2 in On30.

As  a  matter  of  interest   what  alternative  brand  did  you  use?

I assume  that  you removed  the  existing  Bachmann factory  fitted  decoder  but  utilised  the  on board  speakers?

I am intersted in  your  application  as  in  the  event  of  my purchasing  a  2nd  Whitcomb  i would  like  to have  the  sound  slightly different.

The  sound  from  the  bachmann supplied  sound  module  actually  sounds  a  lot  better  in  real time, than  the  sounds  I  have  heard  on You  tube  (so far)!!
