Title: Thomas collection and projects
Post by: MrBob on April 21, 2015, 08:34:20 AM

I'm a 'Mature' modeler from Scotland (UK) I'm of the age that I can remember watching Thomas season 1/2/3 when they 1st came out, and since I was a child I always wanted to do a Thomas layout, but at the time only the Hornby range was available and I didn't like that they were not screen accurate so time passed and I forgot all about it.

But last year I just happen to come across the Bachmann models on eBay and when I seen you could get a Thomas with snowplow I was sold, being in the UK Bachmann Thomas stuff is hard to come by but I managed to get a brand new Thomas with snowplow and hat split from a set and that was the start of my new hobby

about a year as passed and now I have a growing collection with some of my own projects in there too

Thomas

The Bachmann models are fantastic but in some areas not perfect I also only really want to model Season 1/2/3 as that's what I watched growing up, I've made alterations to a few to make them more screen accurate 1st one I done was Thomas

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201104_zpsk86fx47q.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201104_zpsk86fx47q.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201105_zpsl7orpgzh.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201105_zpsl7orpgzh.jpg.html)

I'm a mature modeler so not fussed about the moving eyes so I replaced this face with a more screen accurate face

painted the area between his tanks and wheel arch black

the grey area under the cab door painted black

and put the season 1/2 red pin striping on the back of his bunker

and of course you cant have Thomas without Annie and Clarabel

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201103_zpsoj7ssjgd.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201103_zpsoj7ssjgd.jpg.html)

their chassis were painted black

and Clarabel got a guards section

Edward

Edward s pretty much perfect, Bought off ebay as a non runner replaced the motor (great parts service bachmann have!) now runs perfect

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Edward/th_Photo%201108_zpsb76g7fcl.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Edward/Photo%201108_zpsb76g7fcl.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Edward/th_Photo%201106_zpsc2jtpooc.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Edward/Photo%201106_zpsc2jtpooc.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Edward/th_Photo%201107_zpskgq5a9kd.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Edward/Photo%201107_zpskgq5a9kd.jpg.html)

the tender steps has there centers panted black

the cab was painted black

cab controls were added

As of yet I don't have anything for Edward to pull

I did make some old branch line coaches

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/th_Photo%201110_zps8k787pri.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/Photo%201110_zps8k787pri.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/th_Photo%201109_zpszxfvwmii.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/Photo%201109_zpszxfvwmii.jpg.html)

But I wasn't happy with there finish so I have started again, so far I have just remade the brake coach

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/th_Photo%201113_zps1tadbh7k.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Old%20branch%20line%20coaches/Photo%201113_zps1tadbh7k.jpg.html)

Henry

Henry again excellent model

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Henry/th_Photo%201114_zps935ya2zl.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Henry/Photo%201114_zps935ya2zl.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Henry/th_Photo%201115_zps8yymyqi8.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Henry/Photo%201115_zps8yymyqi8.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Henry/th_Photo%201116_zpsu3d2och2.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Henry/Photo%201116_zpsu3d2och2.jpg.html)

I got Henry along with Edward as a non runner again replaced the motor works perfect,

painted the grey bits black

painted his cab black

added cab detailing

cut out the sloping section on the cab side of the tender and replaced with a right angle section

painted his steps centers black

by the time I got into buying the bachmann models Gordons and the red express coaches had been discontinued, but they weren't screen accurate anyway so I made my own

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Henry/th_Photo%201141_zpsja5cknxh.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Henry/Photo%201141_zpsja5cknxh.jpg.html)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Henry/th_Photo%201140_zpsabxuq2yg.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Henry/Photo%201140_zpsabxuq2yg.jpg.html)

WOW! Amazing work. Can't wait to see how they look when finished. I have a couple of questions though. What faces did you use to replace Thomas Percy and James'? And how did you manage to make those moulds for the brake down train? Any other tips on how you modded the others (Percy eye) would be helpful too. Again great job.  :o

Wow! That's some great modeling! I like how the breakdown train is looking. I have a rake of 6 Hornby Maunsell coaches and have been debating whether or not to repaint them, but now I'm convinced after looking at the ones you have! They look fantastic! Keep up the great work! any pictures of a layout to show?

The replacement faces are from Hornby models, there pretty much direct swaps only you lose out on the eye moments

The brake down train is annie/clarabel chassis, remove there buffers and cut down there side boards

the body work of the brake down trains is hand cut plasticard glued together then fill in any gaps with model filler, sand smooth bit like a kit/jigsaw then painted green then glued to the annie/clarable chassis, i still have one flat bed to make i could do a walk through if you're interested?

Thomas mods were easy enough just repaints, the face just pops off, the Hornby face has a ridge on the back side of it which needs sanded down, once done a little spot of glue and fits directly in place

James again mostly repaints, making sure when you paint the wheels not to get any on the rim of the wheels or it will cause cut outs, the black bit on the back of his tender was removed with white spirit (mineral spirits in the US) being very very careful as its nasty stuff and will strip the black lining if it over splashes

the face removes easy, on the under side, in front of the wheels, there is 2 silver screws and a hole, down the hole there is a screw that holds the face in, remove it the pop the face off, the Hornby ones fits perfectly in place

the front coupler was made from a spare Edward front bogie i had, cut it in half just behind the screw, then i used the bit of plastic that holds James front wheels, turned it up side down, lined up where the axle used to go with the axle in the new bogie made a hole in it for the screw, remove the spring and painted the bare metal black

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/James/th_Photo%201057_zpsfos8nbpe.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/James/Photo%201057_zpsfos8nbpe.jpg.html)

his cab was a bit of work, undo the screws that hold it to the body and it lifts off, you will see the little PCB circuit board screwed to the chassis, remove the screws and you can fold it and the wires into his fire box, fits just snugly, cut off all the mounting off the chassis, i cut a square bit of plasticard for the cab floor it cover all the holes, and a bit of plasticard to cover over the fire box, undo the screw that holds the roof on the cab and cut it all smooth, then using a very sharp knife and a steady hand cut out the back of the cab then glue the roof on to the cab

Percy again the face pops off with a flat blade screw driver, remove the eyes and remove the ridge from the Hornby face, small dab of glue it should fit perfectly

the front hoop i had a spare Percy chassis the i cut the rear section off of and glued it on under the buffer bar so a coupler could be screwed on but the chassis is to close so had to remove the hook and spring bit so its just the hoop but as long as all your running stock has hooks they hook on to it and he can pull things backwards

the side steps i used a very very sharp knife ran it parallel with the running board and cut the steps off trying to keep the running board as smooth as you can, sand down any cut marks, then glue them back on underneath, make sure however you leave enough space for the side rods to pass the steps or they will jam the wheels repaint the side boards red

the leaf spring suspension detail was cut from an old scrap truck i had, then the area under his boiler was sanded down using a dremel like rotary tool and a point sander, dont remove all the flat green section though it covers a hole in the chassis just cut it enough for the detailing to sit in it

the coal and bunkers a bit tricky, the coal is a separate moulding so it can be popped out, cut the coal down so its just the coal detail that left, when the coals out use a sharp modeling knife and with a steady hand slowly mark 3 lines in the back of the bunker, and just keep slowly scoring them till they cut all they way through then use some sand paper folded over, insert  it in to the cuts you made and sand the cut bigger till your happy with the gap making sure you don't put to much pressure in case you snap any plastic, mask off and paint black, the windows i used a paper hole punch to punch a hole in masking take, stick the tape where you think the window should go and dab some yellow paint on with a brush, once its dry mask off some small lines through the yellow and dab black on to complete the look, put the coal back in job done

if you're wanting screen accuracy like me I removed all the small detailing from the coaches and smoothed out the end doors and of course they have to be all 3rd class

no layout as of yet, I have an old Hornby track mat system i built years ago but its kinda fell into disrepair

I have drew up a 'dream' layout I would like to make, just need to see what time and money is like once I collect all the locos and rolling stock I want

I sold an non running Edward and a Henry to a Robert in Scotland via eBay a few months back.

If it's you, glad they went to good use. I bought new ones! All your work looks great.

Thanks for the info, and I would certainly be appreciative of any how to videos you could post, as I am sure would others, especially of how to make customs moulds.

My Diesel arrived

Love it, but the cgi face bugs me a little, maybe a future change

Mavis

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Mavis/th_Photo%201201_zpsjaywffdq.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Mavis/Photo%201201_zpsjaywffdq.jpg.html)

Just need to paint, add tension hooks, brake pipes and a face to it

Still to finish are 2 red and white express coaches they just need painted and finish off my brake down train, will need some free time for that

The models here look incredible and I am glad to see another talented modeler join the board!

The express coaches look fantastic, and I really like how you have taken the time to make them look really accurate to the ones used in the original show.

I'm interested in seeing what kind of new face you are planning to give Diesel, I never liked the CGI face that Diesel had.  At least Arc did a better job at giving him his "devious" personality.  Either way a model face on Diesel would especially look flattering on the model, particularly with the silver siderods shown on Diesel which were used only in the second and third seasons.

Looking forward to hearing more in regards to upcoming projects, particularly the breakdown train and the old van.

You're work is fantastic, I hope you don't mind if I ask you questions

How did you make Clarabel's Brake Compartment?
How did you modify Percy's Coal Bunker?

Boco and Daisy, they're pretty much what fills in the gap? ;) I kinda hope for Daisy more than Boco, tbh. She is unique and contributes so much to the show's personality spectrum. Plus another female character in the Bachmann range.

With Diesel CGI face, I honestly don't mind Bachmann using CGI faces considering that they're really capture the homage of the classic series. Especially Oliver/Toad, the best faces rendered by Arc.
With Diesel, I have to agree that it kinda bugs me, because of his cheerful expression.
But considering that Bachmann does it to meet up with the licenser's standards, I understand. I wouldn't mind at all Oliver's CGI face, they just need to get his scaling right.

Nothing in mind but will most likely use a Hornby face

sure happy to help

Its easy enough, I used a small bit of plasticard glued in to fill in the window

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201206_zps43seotdy.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201206_zps43seotdy.jpg.html)

then mask off the area you want to make the compartment

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201208_zpsq13lrvjl.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201208_zpsq13lrvjl.jpg.html)

then using model filler

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201207_zpsgycyx5hh.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201207_zpsgycyx5hh.jpg.html)

I use humbrol as its all that is readily available to me but any model filler should work

lay down a thin layer of filler over the area you have masked off, keep adding in thin smooth layers till you are happy with the way it looks (the smoother you lay it on the less sanding you will need to do)

once the fillers dry take some really fine (1500 - 2000 grit) sand paper and sand down the filler till its even and smooth, dont be scared to go to far, if you take to much off add another thin layer and sand back again till you are 100% happy with it, remove the masking tape to make a clean strait line

then i used :

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/th_Photo%201210_zpsydtrhtio.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Thomas/Photo%201210_zpsydtrhtio.jpg.html)

Revell Aqua color '85' brown, best match I could get without having to mix a custom color, remasking tape it then same idea lay it on smooth (best to thin it with a touch of water) once dry fine sand it back and repaint till you are happy with the finish, then lacquer it and remove the masking tape

the coal bunker was a bit tricky

the coal and the bunker are 2 different parts, so  use a small flat screw driver and pop the coal out the bunker

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201212_zpsgg1aska3.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201212_zpsgg1aska3.jpg.html)

cut the bottom of the coal molding off so it will sit lower

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201213_zps1ww5c8ov.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201213_zps1ww5c8ov.jpg.html)

i also cut the hump out the bunker

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201214_zpsqkvqr6w4.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201214_zpsqkvqr6w4.jpg.html)

though I don't know if that's necessary or not

this is the tricky bit, with the coal out using a very sharp knife cut the 3 louvers into the back the of bunker, make sure they line up with the louvers on the side of the bunker

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201215_zpsebpyjfp7.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201215_zpsebpyjfp7.jpg.html)

just initially score the plastic once you are happy with there placement keep running over the scores with the knife till you cut all they way through (takes a long time and its a bit boring but best way to do it without stressing and braking the plastic) once you have cut all 3 right through use sand paper folded over on its sell and push it though the louvers you just cut and sand side to side till the louvers become larger holes

for the windows i used masking take and a document punch

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201216_zpspmpqwhrk.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201216_zpspmpqwhrk.jpg.html)

to make a hole in the tape

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201218_zpsz1pnkcwe.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201218_zpsz1pnkcwe.jpg.html)

place the hole where you want the window

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Percy/th_Photo%201219_zpstu2izegd.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Percy/Photo%201219_zpstu2izegd.jpg.html)

then dab some yellow paint on with a brush

Quote from: JLK2707 on June 04, 2015, 06:55:55 AM
can you please tell me what you used to make the composite and brake coaches?

sure!

The base models are all 3rd class Hornby SR (southern Railway) Maunsell Coaches (or as pictured Ex SR British railway red/cream Manunsell coaches)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/th_Photo%201220_zps69xvpas0.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/Photo%201220_zps69xvpas0.jpg.html)

I remove the body and all the fine detailing that the express coaches don't have like front/rear corridor doors, using model filler like I did above for the Clarable compartment, mask off the roof and windows (both inside and out)

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/th_Photo%201221_zpskaf1wbde.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/Photo%201221_zpskaf1wbde.jpg.html)

repaint in express coach colors

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/th_Photo%201222_zpsmq8mypii.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/Photo%201222_zpsmq8mypii.jpg.html)

or like the ones pictured will be getting painted season 2 red and white, brake coaches have rear duckets which are a separate molding from the main body so can be easily removed without cutting, again cover the hole left with plasticard, model filler smooth and paint

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/th_Photo%201223_zpsfuxjn9zr.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/TTTE%20HO/Gordon/Photo%201223_zpsfuxjn9zr.jpg.html)

Also, I am just wondering what colour paints you used to paint these coaches. Please tell me as I would love to know. :)

I use:

Tamiya surface primer (spray)

for the express coaches I used

Humbrol 21 gloss black (spray)

Humbrol 3 Brunswick green (spray)

Revell aqua color 314 Beige (pot)

Humbrol 19 Red (spray)

Humbrol 22 White (spray)

old branch line coaches i used

Tamiya X1 black (pot)

Tamiya X45 Green (pot)

Revell aqua color 314 Beige (pot)

(the plastic they are made off doesn't take to Humbrol sprays paints. they dry all cracked and bumpy so had to switch to Tamiya brush on paints)

Clarabels color match is Revell Auqa colour  85 Brown (pot)

Annie/Clarabel Chassis is Humbrol 21 Black (spray)

the works unit is

Tamiya X1 Black (pot)

Revell aqua color 360 Fern Green (pot)

(again the Humbrol sprays wouldnt take to its plastic)

the brake down train is

Humbrol 21 black (spray)

Humbrol 80 grass green (spray)

any black touch up work on the Bachmann models was Tamiya X1 black (pot)

Percys running board was repainted in Humbrol 19 Red and his rear window is Humbrol 69 Yellow

The laughing van has now been painted in a custom color mixed using Tamiya X1 and Tamiya X9 brown its a really dark almost black brown

1st off the TV series coaches are out of scale and a little shorter than they should be

probably due to scale 1 coaches would be huge

a side from that they're identical to 3rd class coaches, the difference between the classes is 1st class the compartments are bigger 3rd class would have been to squeeze more people into them, 1st was more of a luxury, this is shown by the spacing of the windows on the compartment side of the coach

3rd:

I bought a TT 3 and removed its face (they're only glued on and can be prised off gently with a small flat blade screwdriver) I also bought a TT 1 (or 2 or 4 or plain open wagon) removed its face by prising it off with a small screw driver and glued on the TT 3 face in its place

Those Coaches look really close to the Red Express Coaches as seen in S8-12, just in slightly different shades.

There not Bachmanns, I waited till Bachmann launched their coaches till I made my decision on how to model them

The Bachmann versions are great but their brake coach is missing the windowless section and as I'm going for as screen accurate as possible I had to make my own

Composite R4302B

Brake R4339B

or Hornby BR (Ex SR) 3rd Class Maunsell Coaches (red and cream livery)

Can you please tell me what coaches you used to make the old coaches?

all 3 are Ratio 610 3rd class 4 wheel coach kits however one is modified to look like the old brake coach, basically filled in 2 windows and painted in the lines for the double doors

however with ratio kits make sure you get brand new kits as the newer style kits come with brass bushes for there axles which make them run super smooth the older kits dont

another tip is try getting some scrap/spare repair wagons or coaches and remove their metal weights and glue them into your ratio kit as the kits don't come with the weights and this helps prevent derailments

oh and the couplers that come with the kit arent very good so i bought bachmann hook n loops but use the longer ones like that are on Duck, Donald, Douglas, Toby etc as the ratio buffers and quite long

the brake down train is 4 annie/clarabel chassis the body of the brake down train is styrene plasticard cut into the shapes of the brake down train and glued together like a jigsaw/kit,  fine scale chain and axles from old scalextric slot cars for the lifting mechanism

the works unit is a ratio 610 4 wheel coach kit heavly alterd with windows cut out and blanked, new ends with rounded tops, new curved roof made and roof air vents made by cutting off excesses sprue

Anyway Edward and Percys cattle trucks from 'Cows'

6 TT#3's with faces removed and 2 brake vans repainted

full list is at the bottom of page 1 but for this project i used

a 3/4 to 1/4 mix of Tamiya X9 brown and X1 black

the green doors are the standard green of the Bachmann TT #3

chassis are Tamiya X1

the roofs are a mix of Tamiya XF-53 grey and Revell 378 dark grey

brake vans are again a mix of X9 and X1

roofs are Revell 302 matt black

Hey mate,

Found this thread a couple of weeks ago and have to say you've done a really top job here. I'm like yourself and really enjoy series 1 & 2 much more than anything after that, must be an 80's kid thing haha. Most of the posters have asked anything that that I would ask myself, but one question I have for you is: What is the best way to go about removing the names and faces from the Bachmann Annie & Clarabel's? I'd like to do James' coaches myself and a little unsure how to do it without marking the orange paint.

Top effort mate, keep it up. Particularly impressed with the James makeover, old branchline coaches and the Flying Kipper. I'll be tackling those projects myself in good time. How is the layout coming along?

Hey there

Not done much Thomas related stuff lately but I do have a hand full of project in my mind I want to do soon plus eagerly awaiting news on Oliver and Toad but been focusing on real locos lately some have Thomas connections though:

LNER W1 which was the real life 'galloping sausage'

and

(http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc349/mrunsmiley/OO-HO/th_Photo%201338_zpsupklertm.jpg) (http://s526.photobucket.com/user/mrunsmiley/media/OO-HO/Photo%201338_zpsupklertm.jpg.html)

twin tender flying scotsman as seen in 'tender engines'

but this month I got my finger out and made a base board and started laying some track, so far got 2 loops with approx 19 meter running lengths, perfect for long trains! I want another 2 loops then I'll start on stations ect but at least I have something to run them on now

as for removing the names I found a good rub with a little edge of a microfiber cloth dipped in white spirt works, takes a bit of time to start with but comes off

do you want to remove the faces but keep the windows or like mine that have blank ends on each side?

Cheers for the advice, I'll give it a try this weekend. I was thinking of just leaving them as is, I like the end windows and not sure if my modelling skills are up to cutting one end off to glue on another and doing a good job of it. Obviously that still leaves the noses, it's comical just thinking about it but it won't bother me too much one it's done (I think haha). Also, I'd like to add lights to all my passenger coaches too, so that way the end windows will still be effective.

I plan to collect some non Thomas locos as well, aleady have a Flying Scotsman, got that when I was a kid. But I love those BR Prairie tanks so I'll get one of those and a standard pannier tank as well for starters. It should all fit with the Thomas stuff contextually, my layout will be small town/countryside Britain circa 1930's/40's. The only departure from that will be two great Australian loco's (I'm Aussie): The 3801 and the Hudson R761.  Hopefully two main lines for parallel runs and a branch line for the smaller engines with fiddle yard for the shunters.

Good to hear you've got some track underway, keen to see some of these trains pounding the rails.

Mr. Bob, if you don't mind me asking, how did you model Gresley's (somewhat) famous "hush hush" W1 class? I know a person who has considered that projects, and whilst I don't have the confidence to undertake it right now, I'd love take a crack at it myself in the future. You did an amazing job on it :)

Also, totally unrelated but I'm glad to see another Australian on the board, this is probably long overdue, but welcome, SeaEagle :)

One last remark, to anyone who seeks to run Red Coaches more accurate to those in Seasons 2 and 3, have you considered repainting the roofs and the coaches, and "filling in" the back windows, or by that point is it just better to use a kit to make them?

Regards to all,

~Alex :)

its not as hard as it seems to cut the ends off, if you use a new retractable Utility knife blade it cuts the plastic like butter, just cut more off then you need and trim it down to size one its off the model

you can also use the blade to scrap the noses off the window ends and then use fine sand paper to sand the rest off, using finer and finer sand paper till there's nothing left of the nose and you have removed all the scratches

I have a Bachmann pannier I got when I was a good few years younger as it was ducks basis, fantastic model as well, will pull anything with no fuss, however I am a bit of on an LNER fan and it doesn't really fit with the rest of my models

your plans sounds like it covers all the bases, are UK models easy to come by in Australia? I've been to Perth, Melbourne and Sydney but never had time to look into models shops when I was there

that 3801 looks impressive, will need to show it off when you do it

will need to wait till I get a better camera as its in my loft with 2 lights its a bit dark and the video quality isn't great

It is a kit from a company called southeastern finecast, the kit is the body work, tender and chassis however they can supply a motor/gearbox and wheels/axles as well at an extra cost to make the complete running model, you need supply glue or solder (its a metal kit), paint and the transfers to fully finish, they also do the rebuilt W1 with the A4 style streamlining

however I only used the body work/rear under cab pony truck and fitted it to a Hornby A4 Ready To Run chassis and Hornby RTR tender, again not sure how easy these parts would be to source in Australia but southeastern finecast are a great bunch of people more then happy to help with anything they can

The Bachmann red coaches are a great representation of the coaches in the later seasons and in CGI, there is no denying that, and just like their annie/clarables there great quality items

However if like me you're after the season 2/3 coaches the kits are exactly spot on as the Bachmann ones would be 1 window too short if you where to blank off the windows for the brake coach

With that said the kits are expensive and a bit of work to run correctly, using the supplied wheels they are not free running and I have had to drill out the axle boxes and glue in brass bushes for the axle ends to sit in then fill in the holes and repaint the chassis other wise the Thomas models struggled to pull them

Thank you very much for the information, Mr.Bob, and models of UK engines, be it through Bachmann or Hornby's respective OO ranges are quite easy to come by, easier in fact, than models of Australian engines. I think I read somewhere that Australia is Bachmann UK's and Hornby's largest consumer outside of Britain and the US.

Ah, I didn't realise they were one window shorter in the CGI seasons, but as you said it's a hard kit, I feel I'd start somewhere else, maybe something easier. I have a mate who used a Ratio kit to create a good looking pair of "the Old Coaches" from Season 1, with the main assembly he did not seem to have much of an issue.

SeaEagle, I haven't seen either of those loco's selling for anything resembling a reasonable price, did you manage to get them for a reasonable price? And also, what company produces them? Sorry for the questions, I am just rather curious about those 2 engines. I must admit, I've taken a brief pause from my Thomas collection to build up a collection of circa BR engines, but I intend to return to the Thomas collection as soon as possible, but I have digressed way too far.

Thank you for all your help, Mr.Bob, and best of luck in your endeavors, SeaEagle,
~Alex :)

Cheers for the welcome Alex, didn't think there'd be many Australian's here but good to know. I don't have either of those loco's yet, and yes, as you suggested they're about $600 a pop!! A company called Eureka Models seems to make them but they seem to only do limited runs of them based on demand. You're right, Australian models get almost zero exposure overseas so there will never be great demand for them, hence the higher price. Those models look quality though.

If you're interested, there's a documentary called Pure Steam. I had it on video when I was a kid and watched it to death. It's about the 3801 and R761 touring together in 1988 for our Bicentenary, the Flying Scotsman is in there too and that's why they're my 3 favourite 'big' loco's. It's on DVD too, I found it at an ABC shop. It's called 'The Flying Scotsman Down Under'. The link to Pure Steam is below, Mr. Bob you might enjoy it too.

Also, where do you buy your Bachmann Thomas stuff here? I find it hard to come by, and eBay prices are going up as our dollar goes down  :-[

Mr Bob,

Not sure how all this quoting business works haha. In my experience British models have always been easy to come across. As Alex said, usually easier than the Australian stuff. I find the Bachmann Thomas range harder to find than Hornby. I live near Sydney and the main model railway shop 'Hobbyco' only stocks Hornby, unless things have changes since I was last there. I'm not too keen on Hornby Thomas engines because as you have also said they aren't TV series accurate, however I don't mind their rolling stock so Hobbyco is always an option there. I started my Bachmann engine collection 4 or 5 years ago buying off eBay from the US. I have Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy and Diesel. Still have Toby, Henrietta and Duck to complete my immediate collection. I like the look of Bill and Ben/Donald and Douglas, but they might have to wait a little while yet, priorities. If Bachmann announce Daisy I'll grab her straight away, that would be a great addition to the collection.

Cheers for the feedback, I think I might just try and slice the noses off and buff it all up, see how that turns out?

Hi James,

I usually bought from a local hobby stores (when I first started collecting I was in Canberra, but usually got something from stores in Sydney when visiting family (but it was usually all Hornby and from Hobbyco, once a cousin found a store in Sydney that stocked Bachmann Thomas but I have since forgotten its name), I now live in WA, but I haven't bought anything in a while, I drifted away from the hobby a while ago, and it took me a little while to drift back in, now that I have, I've wanted to get some circa 1950 BR stuff. I used to buy online, especially when the US dollar was beneath the AUS dollar a few years ago. My family visited the US during that time period too, I got a Bachmann Diesel and an Ice Cream Van in New York City :) they were very cheap. Train shows are always a good place to attend to, I managed to pick up a barely used Hornby 9F with a friend for only $60.00AUS each. He is very proud of our little 9F, I think we should nickname her [the 9F], but I'm unsure of what :P

And thank you for the documentary and the name of the company, I expected expensive, but around $500AUS, oh well, I guess I'll have the money one day, something gives me the feeling those 2 engines would look good with some BR (ex-LNER) Crimson and Cream Gresley corridor express coaches, or BR MKI Maroon Coaches, ah the possibilities.

Those 3 are some of my favourite loco's, Flying Scotsman is after all, the engine that brought me into liking real life engines more and more, there are plenty of other loco's I love though. But I feel if I go on much longer I'll drift a little too far from the topic at hand, I could always PM you later about it I guess :)

So, BOT (Back On Topic), fantastic models, Mr.Bob and James, I'm sure you'll get the hang of quoting soon. Anyway, regards all,

~Alex :)

Really nice job on capturing the classic series, nice to see since most people are focusing on the new cgi series. One suggestion I would make is making the roof of the red express coaches black like it was in series 2-3,
