Title: DCC in IHC steamers
Post by: SteamGene on November 16, 2007, 10:06:21 AM
Has anybody put DCC in an IHC steamer?  I want to upgrade my IHC Consolidation and 0-8-0.  Does the motor need to be isolated?  Insulated from the frame?  I assume the bulb needs replacing.

Gene,  last Spring when I was "training", I put a circuit board decoder in an older, non Premier type.  I had to isolate the motor and new bulbs.     Stephen

I installed a TCS M1 decoder in an IHC Premier "Pacific" without doing anything major to it.  The motor power connectors are isolated from the chassis, but one lead was common with a headlight lead. It wasn't a major operation to isolate it.

I put one in a mike (should be pretty close) anD was able to fit the decoder inside the cab without modifiyng the cab. I used different lights, but they were still regular 12-14v lights. I also used the power pickups from the tender and ran 2 more wires (for a total of 4) to the cab. I used wires from an old computer mouse and colored the exposed parts black to "hide" them better.

sorry for any typos as I can only type with one hand at the moment...
