Title: ON30 Shay
Post by: bigk01 on January 01, 2016, 04:33:45 PM
I am a new member, although I have been reading the forum for a couple of years.

I have recently purchased a dc shay (beautiful model). My problem is it will not
go around an 18" radius curve with the "engine" on the inside of the curve without derailing.
Seems the front truck doesn't swivel enough. (Rear truck swivels much more)

I think the telescoping square drive shaft is bottoming out. Anybody else have this problem?
Any thought's ?

Thanks in advance, K

Hi K,
i had the same problem.
if you are very careful you can trim small amounts off the shaft (where it slides into the coupler) so it will not fall out if you go  the other direction with the "engine" on the outside the curve.
you dhould be able to rotate the truck enough to get the shaft in and out without removing i, just make sure to align the shaft the same way it came out.
Willis.

Removed ~.01-.015 from square shaft and saw some improvement, but it still derailed on curves.

Upon closer inspection, discovered female part of driveshaft had

flash up near the "u" joint on the inside not allowing the shaft to

fully compress. Fixed that and ran fine.

Except, after about 5 laps on my test oval it quit running!?

Track has voltage, headlight works, but no go, no humming or buzzing.

This is a dc model.

Should I start a new thread for this?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again K

Possibly while working on that truck, one of the wires came off the motor terminal.  You'll have to take the shell off to find out but that makes the most sense to me.
