Title: DC GP38-2 motor isolated from frame?
Post by: NKline on March 11, 2016, 12:40:16 PM
I have a DC (Non DCC On Board) Bachmann HO G38-2 in the blue box with the clear window. I'm working on installing DCC/Sound and I was wondering if the motor is isolated from the frame or not? I looked at the reference sheet on the Bachmann website (http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/H617X_IS001.pdf) and it looks like it is but I looked at the tcs website installation pics for the Bachmann GP-35 (http://www.tcsdcc.com/Customer_Content/Installation_Pictures/HO_Scale/Bachmann/GP35/GP35.html) and it looks like the same setup as the GP38-2 but explains how to isolate the motor from the frame. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

the gp35 is a split frame design. if you look carefully at the photos from tcs, you will see the space between the frame halves. the gp35's motor is not isolated from the frame. it appears that the gp38-2 diagram you linked to shows the motor to be isolated from the frame, but earlier versions were not isolated. those older units had tabs on the motor that contacted the frame, instead of wired between the frame and the circuit board.

The gp 38-2 has its motor isolated from the frame if that is what you have .Mr. Ward is going on about a gp 35 for some reason when your question involves the gp 38-2 ,but  he is correct with the info that he provided us for that model the gp 30/35.

johnny,

if you looked at the tcs links the op has provided, they are of a split frame gp35. read the WHOLE post before you comment please.

I see I will have to repeat myself yet again. the original poster had linked to a tutorial from TCS on how to install a decoder in a split frame gp35. obviously you did NOT click on the link. as I have pointed out, the gp35 and gp38-2, while similar in size, use completely different chassis.

in case you actually care here is the original post.

note that the original poster needed clarification as to whether those two locomotives used the same setup. they do not.
