Title: Whitcomb question
Post by: scarpi on November 19, 2016, 12:34:52 PM
I am thinking of getting an On30 Bachmann Whitcomb diesel. Does anybody know the dimensions of this engine. Specifically the width of the frame at the bottom, the length, and the width at the top of the body? I am wondering about my layout clearances. Thank you.

One of these clearance gauges would help you a lot............

I'm certain Bachmann builds to the NMRA On30 standards.

Hello,

I found a Whitcomb now in my storeroom.

The measured size is

lenght = 7" over footboards, 7.5" over couplers

widtht = 2"

height =3.15" with horn on the roof

For clearences On30 see NMRA Standard S7, preliminary note and Old Time Dimensions, Scale O
http://www.nmra.org/sites/default/files/standards/sandrp/pdf/s-7_2012.02.pdf (http://www.nmra.org/sites/default/files/standards/sandrp/pdf/s-7_2012.02.pdf)
It fit exellent for Bachmann On30. With this data you can make an On30 clearance gauge.

For short and small locos (for example 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 Porters from Bachmann) and 18' cars you can make youre own clearence gage with lesser dimensions.
