Title: 4-8-4 DCC conversion
Post by: englep on April 02, 2018, 08:05:36 PM
I have an n-scale 4-8-4 I have converted to dcc but the decoder runs very hot so hot it will burn up.  I have run it with only the motor running/connected setting on my bench so I know it is the motor drawing too much current am I missing something or is there a better motor to install in this loco.

What is the item number of the locomotive and when did you purchase it? (assuming it was new)
What decoder are you using?

The amperage rating of the motor most likely is too low for the decoder. Get a different decoder with a higher rating. Also, use a DMM to ensure nothing was wired wrong.

I'm sure he meant to high rather than to low.
The excess is dissipated as heat.

Tell us, what is your logic in changing the motor rather than the decoder?

Or is it just a personal decision?
