Title: Bachmann HO FT A Unit DCC Equipped - Noise Issues
Post by: kkm0005@auburn.edu on September 12, 2018, 05:41:18 PM
Hello,

I recently purchased the Bachmann HO FT A&B Units (Seaboard). There came in the blue boxes that says DCC-Equipped Locomotive on the lower portion of the box.

Both units seem to be very loud. It sounds as if it may be caused by the gears on these units.

I have an old Bachmann Plus F7A that I have installed a decoder into that is much quieter than these.
The Plus Unit is virtually silent compared to the units.

Part of me thinks this is common/normal because both the A and B unit both make the same noise.

Is this expected? Can I do anything to make then quieter?

Thank you

Lubrication of the motor bushings is a good start and check to see if the motor is loos in its mount and work your way down the driveshafts and couplings to see if there is excessive play. Most of the time that is where the vibration noise or dry motor bushings noise come from. Bachmann gears usually are pretty quiet unless you have a split axle gear then that is usually a thumping noise.

Thank you very much.

Just a little lubrication did the trick. Can't believe that's all it was. It went from loud and obnoxious to completely silent.

Thanks again
