Title: New Railroad, sorta (Part II)
Post by: Ken Huck on October 24, 2018, 08:42:05 PM
Rather than drag everything forward (with missing pictures and all)  I'd thought I'd do a recap and update all in one.

You remember the void ?

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36589918_180929512764328_2528832510016618496_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=8dcdc2fc3dc19aa8b7e652c9eb4e8b1d&oe=5C4B8970)

..raw materials and a jig...

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36596378_180930226097590_6129003680982106112_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=fd50cd77cbf60af98055808975aea5c7&oe=5C85CF71)

...and what I came up with.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36617490_180930569430889_2320118892095078400_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=feeaca1d412be722973f82ccee10a6df&oe=5C474B19)

Then there was the last shot.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/41332502_245146859675926_1239046392144461824_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=803f642f5fe0aafcce3d0f223320f096&oe=5C4D962B)

Now, fast forward to the little bit of 'void' left.

I'm gradually filling in the bowl shaped bluff behind the trestle.  Starting on the left (or Northeast) end.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43554815_268811127309499_2702848770780954624_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=1b687041d316724b71067b1501d3e8e5&oe=5C843454)

...and also from the right (Southwest).

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43515591_268813183975960_1672515511226728448_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=21affc7476353b439bbc2477fd4c05e8&oe=5C8A8FA4)

Which leaves the middle:

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44723330_268811713976107_511901342235623424_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=b3ae2a4ebdb42e9edd8eb8d55f0856ad&oe=5C7F2B7D)

The 'water' source will be the pond at the top.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43732146_268814383975840_840407207269892096_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=e3ea498cd636e851b4f98ba555d3f023&oe=5C490CEE)

The little cardboard circular thing in the remaining void will be where the pond spills via waterfall and by a
second waterfall down to the creek flowing under the trestle.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43721061_268869907303621_6887259171880697856_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=cd20968984298f65b123d63422f7a995&oe=5C8440F7)

Here's one of my four GP-15-1's dragging a peddler freight across.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44716187_268814183975860_6667204937627205632_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=1175b2c8742aa7359f190a2442eef2df&oe=5C424550)

And if you missed anything, report it to security.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44723315_268811580642787_8683100442764247040_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=fae89c5e2851fc5bb9ef574821f21bde&oe=5C4228BF)

Till next time...

Ken

That is really looking good Ken. The trestle looks like it has been there for years.

Well done!

Picking up where I left off...

Temporarily arranging rock formations

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43770191_268869867303625_2295316495342764032_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=0e7400d65bcf49971900e98b6ebe536b&oe=5C44AB81)

Filling in around with wall plaster.

A little bit yet to cover.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/45259831_273477296842882_8805755328529432576_n.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=095bf1ddb34d32e3b743190759afb1be&oe=5C442B32)

And finished:

Next and final step, adding water, falls, currents and ripples.

As you can see from the last picture, I have quite a few 'voids' to fill.

Until next time.

Thought I'd add a few more progress photos, so now I'm movin' on up the back of the void.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/48368491_302360417287903_8315710812870148096_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=763efcd2b35ddfbf006d29519d4259fd&oe=5CD0F804)

You can see that I still haven't 'poured' any water yet.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/48413401_302360533954558_7731428985250250752_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=fc8398df72821642a011f8f556297d22&oe=5C9B5085)

And there's still a few 'straight edges' that needed to be blended in.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/48395743_302360577287887_7463785766032769024_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=99ce9ca10e6b3cacf27971a686ee396c&oe=5C8C7D66)

The tunnel portals will have to be finished, but first I'll have to the inside of the tunnels.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/48368491_302360417287903_8315710812870148096_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=763efcd2b35ddfbf006d29519d4259fd&oe=5CD0F804)

Once I complete this 'triangular' portion, I'll be going onto the back wall and start on the mining district.
(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/48360421_302360803954531_417665073952063488_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=dad98a131c7e8d59ab5ae6a6bce3d61f&oe=5CD3EE5F)

...more to follow...

...pickin' up where I left off, half of one of the tunnel portals is finished.

This area will probably be next.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/49829630_313995889457689_5858908950266642432_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=51be8c6b17209340839c95f01c38b39c&oe=5CD116A6)

Still have a lot more to do.  Maybe, just maybe, one of these days I'll get enough motivation to start on all
the water falls and pools......maybe...

Not scratched.  It's a Hydrocal casting from Woodland Scenics that I had saved from the 'earlier' layout.
I  am planning on scratch-building the other one using left over 'raw' materials from the trestle project.

Thanks to all for your interest.

Here's a scratch-built tunnel portal.  I made this last night.  I used the Woodland Scenic one as a guide.
I had to make it a little wider because of the converging tracks from the siding.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/49333500_315167912673820_4829975729791827968_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=45185af5aca0ddd139d4ab4004add53b&oe=5C8C4005)

You'll notice the bold pattern is a little off because of the width and still has to be shifted a bit to the right.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/49895869_315167959340482_5407533597131276288_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=3e23bb4e5d97b456719866e7d0808de5&oe=5CBDED4B)

Anyway, thanks for looking and now back to the....next phase...

I'm gonna need a few more of those sets to finish.

More to come.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't a clue !  At first I thought it was a piece of turquoise aquarium
gravel.  I know I have some somewhere, but that wasn't it.  It isn't a piece of landscape foam either.
I did eventually chisel it out and re-stain the plaster.  Hopefully the next 'pour' will cove it.

Here's an update on my water pours:

The second pour went fine:

This is the top  level that runs under the tracks.

This is the middle level where the water collects before going over the 'falls'.
(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50286167_321496125374332_3200247318423011328_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=ab1d2684c257bfc45319393b8152ea9f&oe=5CB7AEB0)

And the bottom level where it all collects before going downstream under the tressle.
(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50542023_321496242040987_8708850506870554624_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=54326fa74cd42b1fe54a88a679b440ac&oe=5CB5175B)

You'll notice that little bit of rock outcropping on the right, with a little dark spot underneath ?
Turns out, that an underwater tunnel.  Wasn't planned that way, it's a natural geological occurrence.
Once the second 'pour' reached a certain depth, it started running out the tunnel.

Here's the third 'pour'.
(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50416216_321496065374338_5732873040476241920_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=c959113ef4aaf23971dcae1b5fb994ce&oe=5CB84654)

I should've moved everything out of the way before I even started the first 'pour'.  Live and learn.

Luckily, this indoor/outdoor carpet was on the way out anyway.  The carpet was not glued to the concrete,
and the 'water' didn't stick to either.  There must've been a 'backing on the carpet that prevented the 'water'
from soaking completely through.

Looks like I may need a fourth 'pour'.

Wow! My wife would have been really upset to say the least.

Here I'm back with more recent 'pours'.  To start off, the first one is the 'runoff'...

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51003300_326514998205778_5380555206738051072_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=dc0f1df0f53f8c84b389e5e65f73a4f0&oe=5CF6EE03)

Next I added rivulets made with Woodland Scenics 'Water Affects'.  You sort of just squeeze it out of the
bottle and 'rake' into little lines.  It goes on white and dries clear.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51525135_326515598205718_6846971931967619072_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=5b4f1255bbb90addbb88201e13135c9a&oe=5CC1886C)

Here it is after it dries.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51000315_326516411538970_3418889848465915904_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=c1560e70e5588d208ec098311e938179&oe=5CFF3F09)

...and further downstream...

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/50928443_326516708205607_4276830465152778240_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=5e4809214baee46d0a7a821b204a4df7&oe=5CB2E282)

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51028528_326516744872270_3330866924685885440_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=7da54c2cb1868fcb9a5e174d91b85235&oe=5CB8BECC)

Waterfalls will eventually come off the ledge you can see at the top of the photo.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51095747_326516651538946_1286317562413449216_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=02146de9b24510900a0a5bf885fdd5d2&oe=5CF99583)

That's about it for now.  I'm working on water falls now and hope to install them before long.

Nice work Ken. Your waterworks are very realistic.

Makes me wish I had planned more water features into my layout.

Keep up the good work and keep us updated.

Thanks Sid, I got a little more done today.

I don't know if anybody noticed yet, but there seems to be a couple of pictures starting to 'disappear' at the
beginning of this post.  Anyway, here's today's update:

Got the water falls 'falling' from the rocks.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51783675_329029527954325_3882856873187082240_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=1f51a42e415404ed3c384c68b2803c67&oe=5CFE11BC)

Top looking down, the stream and some ripple effects.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51400213_329029671287644_619156124544794624_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=6ab446d0873bf3cbcacc56ed3b83bd1e&oe=5CFB7913)

The water fall on the right is actually covering up an unfinished part of the bluff.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51176038_329029751287636_142295762619858944_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=ff7696c7f3692c4174b6a83e84873230&oe=5D00CA85)

Just more of the same from different angles.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51547927_329029831287628_4874889706044653568_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=f55bd8db439f5722a49046b41aeef2f0&oe=5CF9FFBA)

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51112734_329029904620954_8748894136238604288_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=1650c22075ffd874af1e3ab0b66de665&oe=5CEBFDBA)

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51059200_329029954620949_7631454421615902720_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=a9ca96dea4b8881eb711f59100d03383&oe=5CEF4412)

I've got a few more layers to add yet.  The most difficult part of using these products is the 24 hour wait
time between 'pours'.

...more yet to come...

Ken

You did good with the water.

They look great, Ken.
But if you ever think of modeling the mist from the falls, might I suggest a portion of a cotton ball pulled very much apart (kinda like Halloween 'spider webbing' that you put on bushes and stuff).

Thanks Terry.  Here's a little more progress.

I added more depth and some more 'ripples'.

Next time I'll have to add 'splashes' around the base of both waterfalls.

'til next time.

Ken.....I am speechless. That is some of the most convincing water effects I have had the pleasure to see.

Really great work!

Thanks Sid, here's one more shot.  I was adding more "waves" on top of more 'white tint' and this pattern emerged.

(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/52806273_341447520045859_4044643038482399232_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=288a8db6c6eb872d110c83ca0aa1efe9&oe=5D2198F1)

And that was by accident !  I think I'll leave it this way and quit while I'm ahead.
