Title: 4-6-0 engine chassis replacement
Post by: QAGuy on December 21, 2018, 04:52:34 PM
First time posting although I've had my set for many years.  It is an old 4-6-0 (Santa Fe 49), version 2 I think.

I see Bachmann is selling Loco Chassis 81092 as a replacement chassis for (I think) my loco.  Am I right on that?

Does this chassis come with detailed instructions for how to do the replacement?  I'm fairly handy with tools,
but I'd really like to have instructions, just in case.

Also, the picture doesn't show the back end of the loco.  What type of connector is on the new chassis.

Thanks.

Hi QAguy,

The chassis number you give is for an Anniversary 4-6-0, but checking my notes I believe your locomotive is a Standard Line Big Hauler.  Unfortunately Bachmann made quite a number of ATSF #49 locos and not all had the same version chassis.  However if yours has the plastic siderods you can be sure it is a standard line Big Hauler 4-6-0.

To get a correct chassis for your you should be looking at the 900xx serirs chassis such as:

https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_671_669&products_id=5863.  These would be more or less(colors vary, as do the pilots)the replacement for your locomotive.

When you buy a chassis from Bachmann they do not include instructions.  Check out my repair tips in this Link:

They will give some instruction on dis assembly of your locomotive and how to keep track of things.

You could also go ahead and get a 810xx series chassis with the metal siderods and it  will fit, but you may have to do a little filing here and there.

The An niversary 810xx series do have two smoke box switches while early 4-6-0 BH's have only one.  so some rewiring will be necessary and you will need to buy a new smokebox cover with two slots for the switches.  The Annie also has wiring for a rear headlight, but the tender on your Standard line Big Hauler 4-6-0 does not, so if you want to add a rear headlight you would have to get a bulb and leads and find a way to connect the wiring to the locomotive. If the chassis you order is for a wood burner tender there would be no wiring for the rear light.

The easy most simple will be to use the 900xx style chassis.

Have fun with your project!
