What do you use to attach chains to flat cars in order to secure logs on them?

I use a cotter pin through the bunk with a jewelry split ring attaching the chain. I have seen the ends of the chain use small rare earth magnets to hold the logs in place. The difficulty with the magnets is finding chain in steel material. Most jewelry chain is brass or copper.
