Title: Gas Electric Doodlebug
Post by: plint on March 28, 2019, 05:55:17 PM
I have a Bachmann #81409 one of these marked Boston & Maine on the label. I know the stock car was maroon and yellow. This car is green and yellow with Boston & Maine lettering.  Was this made by Bachmann or did someone create their own?  It's rather unique and cool.
Thanks

Here's one for sale on flea bay. Same model number. Looks like you got a special one.......they are supposed to be maroon.

Upon further review, it appears to be an undecorated green one that was lettered for B&M although not prototypical.  The yellow lettering are decals.  I'm thinking this was someone's little project that was done rather nicely.  I can't upload the picture because it says the size is too large  ???

As I said before, you need a photo hosting site like Photo Bucket. It should be explained down below in the General Discussions forum.

I went to Photobucket and to register, I need to pony up $4 per month to submit my photos.  Is this right?  Not worth it to me.  I've never had problems anywhere uploading photos from my computer except here.

If you go almost to the bottom of the Photobucket home page, you'll find this:

"Looking for our free plan? Sign up here"

Click on the "Sign up here" and it takes you to the registration page. When done it will try to push one of the paid plans, but you can decline. The one draw back to the free account is it will try and get you to sign up for a paid plan whenever you log it. Just ignore it and go to your gallery.

So I'm in the free Photobucket with the picture.  When I try to post the picture, how do I get to Photobucket?  It always takes me to my picture library.

To post pictures, you can click on the image icon in the BBC Tags area on post reply. Mine shows it under italics. You could also just type the image tags out. The link to the picture on photobucket or other sites goes in between the two tags.

[ img ]https://postimg.cc/mt03kYDp[ /img ] It will look like this.

Without the spaces it becomes a picture.

When you get to the library left click on the picture so it comes up by itself. Once it's up, click on the URL in the "Direct" box on the righ side, and it should say copied. Come back to the forum and paste between the image tags as mentioned by TrainMan.

I give up.  Photobucket has sent  a zillion emails to verify my add and there is no place to verify in the email.  I go to the site and I have a picture in it, the one I want to post here.  I hit browse in this post and only my library shows up in which the pix are too big.  So how do I browse Photobucket so I can post my lonely picture?

The e-mail should have a link in it. You just click the link and it should take you to a page that will basically say, "Your address has been verified". Go from that page to the photobucket log-in page and you should be able to log in.

It has the link but won't allow me to click on it.  Something is messed up with the link.

If the link will not work from the e-mail, try copying it and pasting it directly into your browsers address bar.

Thanks, Len.That worked but getting the Photobucket pic to here is another story.  I click on image upload and I can't copy or paste it.

When you click on the image, you should get something like this:

It doesn't always show at the bottom of the list, but whereever it appears, click on the URL to the right of the word "Direct". It should 'blink' for a second and show the word "copied". The link is now on your computors 'clipboard'. Come to the Bachmann forum and do a 'CTRL-V', or use the edit menu 'Paste' function', and the URL will appear in your post. Add the image tags to each end, without the spaces, like this:

[i m g]https://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l529/Pickanotherid/Miscellaneous/HowTo_zpswejiegc9.jpg[ / i m g]

And you should be in business.

The saga continues....I uploaded phone pix and they are 99 KB,well below the 128 max.  I try to post and now a message says the upload file is full and to contact the administrator.  Is it really this hard?  I do fine everywhere else  :(

I got explicit instructions from Terry on another Bachmann forum post I started, step by step, inch by inch.  All I know is it worked.  Not as easy as other forums.  Thanks, Len for your help and patience.

I did a search and found out a little information.  All of B&M's passenger equipment, including gas cars were painted Pullman green up until 1940.  Bachmann's car were red, Walther's  car was green, and it was shorter than Bachmann's

Bachmann usually stocks a power truck for these models, but it appears to be sold out at the moment. Buy a junk second hand unit and scavenge it for parts.

No idea how much you want to spend or how much work you want to do but NWSL has parts. Their gears are excellent. I have used them over the years. He is supposed to go out of business in August,

I rode in RDC's too years ago and from what I understand, they were a luxury  ride compared to a smelly, noisy non-AC rattling doodlebug.

Doodlebugs had to have big fuel tanks which, filled with gasoline, made them rolling bombs.  Back in the early 1900's, one on the original Missouri and North Arkansas had a cornfield meet with a KCS freight while on KCS trackage rights.  The tank blew up and killed over 40 people.  There was another similar incident on the NYC in the 1940's.

The problem link is from a small town newspaper in Missouri.  Here is another link about the same Missouri doodlebug wreck:

http://www.jmarkpowell.com/100th-anniversary-accident-youve-never-heard/

Remember , these gasoline cars were in the pre diesel era.  Small enough diesel prime movers didn't exist yet.

Some were later converted to diesel.  I have operated CNR 15824, which was originally a gas electric and later converted to diesel.
