Title: Bachmann #543030 USRA Light 2-8-2 w/DCC Sound Value
Post by: cmontgomery365 on March 26, 2020, 03:42:20 PM
I'm interested in the Ho Scale "USRA Light 2-8-2 Steam Locomotive (DCC Sound Value-Equipped) Item No.: 54303. The question I have is that I do not have a DCC System on my layout, just a standard DC Transformer. Will this engine still make the sounds without having DCC System?

Yes. It will make chuffs sounds.  If you turn the power up slowly the whistle will blow before the wheels start to move. You will have to turn the power up about half way before the loco will respond.

The microprocessor on the decoder needs five volts DC just to wake up. Standard voltage for digital circuits. Maybe a couple more volts for the loco to move. Nature of the beast.
DC only locos start much sooner.

You can go entry level DCC for $100 to $200.

Just read the details and make sure the entry level can read back the CV's for the decoder and modify the CV;s. Not all can. My MRC2K and the EZ Command can run trains ok but not much else. I bought my MRC2K on ebay for a few dollars and eventually gave it away but it got be started so it was not a waste you might say.
