For a displayh layout, DC should be fine. All two rail DC locomotives will operate on 0 - 12V DC, such as put out by the power packs that come with most train sets.
If you are using seperate items, not a complete train set, I would suggest using an MRC Railpower 1370 power pack. It supplies enough current to operate two locomotives in tandem. I have operated Bachmann and Walthers locomotives together with no problem.
